Chapter 10 - The Concession

The hum of the satellite laptop felt deafening in the silent dining room. Agent Miller straightened up, his professional demeanor remaining calm, though the atmosphere in the room had shifted from a routine bust to a high-stakes legal stalemate. He looked at Clara and Marcus, his expression unreadable.
"We need that decryption key, and we need it now," Agent Miller said, crossing his arms over his chest. "If what you're saying is true—that Mrs. Vance engineered this entire scenario to implicate you both as co-conspirators—then sitting on this locked partition will destroy whatever defense you have left."
"Then let me talk to her," Clara said instantly, stepping forward. Her voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "She’s my mother. She’s locked in a transport van outside, not a maximum-security prison. I can get her to give me the key."
Marcus grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her back slightly. "Are you out of your mind? Mother doesn't negotiate, Clara. She destroys. Walking into that van alone is walking straight into another one of her traps."
"What choice do we have, Marcus?" Clara retorted, pulling her arm free and looking her brother dead in the eye. "If we don't get that key, the feds arrest us both by midnight. We’ll be sharing a cell with the woman who murdered our father. Is that what you want?"
Marcus fell silent, his jaw clenching as he looked away. He knew she was right.
Agent Miller nodded slowly. "I'll authorize a ten-minute supervised conversation in the back of the transport unit. But my agents will be right outside the door, and the entire interaction will be recorded for the magistrate."
"Thank you," Clara said quietly.
She turned away from the table, smoothing the front of her burgundy dress one last time to reclaim whatever armor she had left. The walk down the grand hallway and out the front doors of the estate felt like walking the green mile. The crisp night air hit her face like a physical blow, carrying the scent of damp earth and approaching rain.
Parked at the edge of the circular driveway was a dark federal transport van, its red and blue hazard lights flashing in rhythmic, hypnotic pulses against the manicured hedges. Two armed agents stood guard by the reinforced rear doors. When they saw Clara approaching, the lead agent nodded to Agent Miller, who had followed closely behind her, and unlocked the heavy metal latch.
The heavy door swung outward with a metallic groan. Inside, sitting on a metal bench with her hands cuffed in front of her, was Eleanor. The overhead interior light cast harsh shadows across her face, but her grey eyes were razor-sharp, watching Clara approach with an expression of quiet, triumphant satisfaction.
"I knew you couldn't stay away," Eleanor said softly, her voice echoing in the confined metal space. "You always were too curious for your own good, Clara."
Clara stepped up into the back of the van, the metal floor vibrating beneath her heels. She ignored her mother's taunt and locked eyes with her.
"Give me the decryption key, Mother," Clara demanded, her voice cold and unyielding. "It's over. You lost."

Eleanor let out a low, raspy chuckle, tilting her head. "Lost? My dear child... the game hasn't even truly begun."
