Chapter 7 - The Geneva Vault

The federal agents moved with terrifying efficiency. Within minutes, the dining room was swarming with investigators snapping photographs of the table, bagging the shattered wine glass, and securing the white envelope and the flash drive into evidence bags. Eleanor sat rigidly at the head of the table, refusing to speak another word, her icy silence a mask for the frantic machinery turning in her mind.

Agent Miller carefully picked up the heavy brass key Marcus had handed him. He turned it over in his gloved hand, inspecting the intricate serial numbers engraved near the base.

"This key belongs to the Swiss Federal Depository in Zurich," Agent Miller observed, looking up at Marcus with a sharp, calculating gaze. "Getting physical access to that specific box requires not just the key, but a court-ordered international warrant or the active cooperation of the primary account holder. Since Mrs. Vance isn't likely to cooperate, we will need to expedite the diplomatic paperwork."

"You won't need diplomatic paperwork," Marcus said smoothly, pulling a folded legal document from his briefcase and sliding it across the table. "Father anticipated this exact scenario. He filed a secondary contingency trust three days before his death, naming Clara and me as joint executors with immediate override authority in the event of foul play."

Eleanor’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock and pure rage. "That trust was invalidated by the board in nineteen-ninety-eight! It doesn't legally exist!"

"It was never filed with the corporate board, Mother," Marcus corrected, smiling faintly. "It was filed directly with the Swiss magistrate under a sealed probate umbrella. It became active the moment the primary accounts were flagged for federal investigation."

Clara stared at her brother in disbelief. "You knew about this trust all along? Why didn't you say anything years ago?"

"Because timing is everything, Clara," Marcus replied quietly, avoiding her gaze for a split second. "If we had moved too early, Mother would have dismantled the trust and hidden the assets where nobody could ever touch them. We had to wait until she felt completely untouchable."

Agent Miller scanned the legal document, a slow smile touching his lips. "This changes everything. With this contingency trust, we don't need Mrs. Vance’s consent to open the Geneva vault. We can execute the international digital access protocol tonight."

"Do it," Clara said, her voice resolute. She looked at her mother, feeling a strange mixture of grief and profound liberation. "Let's open the vault and put an end to this nightmare once and for all."

Agent Miller nodded to one of his junior agents, who immediately pulled out a secure satellite laptop and connected it to the encrypted flash drive Marcus had provided earlier. The screen flickered to life, casting a cold blue glow across the formal dining room.

"Establishing secure tunnel to the Zurich depository," the junior agent announced, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Downloading primary file directories now."

The room fell completely silent. On the laptop screen, a progress bar slowly crawled toward completion, accompanied by the low hum of the processor. Eleanor gripped the arms of her chair, her breathing shallow and ragged.

"You are destroying everything your grandfather built," Eleanor whispered, tears finally pooling in her eyes—not of sorrow, but of absolute defeat.

"No, Mother," Clara said softly, watching the progress bar hit ninety-nine percent. "We are finally telling the truth."

The screen flashed green, and a single folder appeared on the desktop, labeled: The Vance Legacy - Truth and Consequences.
