Chapter 6 - The Federal Agent

The heavy footsteps in the hallway grew louder, punctuated by the crisp, authoritative click of dress shoes on hardwood. Eleanor froze in place, her posture rigid as she stared at the oak doors. The illusion of absolute control she had maintained for decades was completely shattered, leaving behind the stark vulnerability of a cornered predator.

A tall man in a charcoal federal suit stepped into the formal dining room, his badge gleaming subtly against his lapel. Behind him stood two junior agents, their presence instantly transforming the opulent family dining room into a federal crime scene. The air in the room grew suffocatingly thin.

"Eleanor Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice deep, measured, and entirely devoid of emotion. He did not wait for an invitation as he advanced toward the head of the table. "I am Agent Miller with the federal financial crimes division. We have a warrant to search this estate and seize all corporate and personal records."

Eleanor straightened her shoulders, attempting a final, pathetic display of aristocratic defiance. "You cannot enter my home without a signed magistrate’s order, and certainly not without my legal counsel present."

Agent Miller pulled a folded document from his inside pocket and placed it squarely on top of the white envelope Clara had brought. "The magistrate signed this warrant an hour ago, Mrs. Vance. Based on substantial evidence regarding corporate fraud, offshore embezzlement, and obstruction of justice."

Clara stood motionless, watching the scene unfold as if she were an outside observer watching a tragic play. The weight of the federal warrant felt like a physical anchor pulling her down into the floorboards. She looked at Marcus, who stood beside her with his hands tucked casually into his pockets, showing no remorse for the bomb he had just detonated.

"My brother orchestrated this," Eleanor hissed, her venomous glare shifting from Agent Miller to Marcus. "He collaborated with outside agencies to dismantle his own family out of spite and greed."

"No, Mother," Marcus said, his voice chillingly calm. "I simply refused to let you drag Clara down with you to save your own skin. You built an empire on lies and corpses, and every empire eventually falls."

Agent Miller’s eyes flicked to Clara, lingering on the burgundy dress and the shards of glass on the Persian rug. "Miss Vance? Are you alright? We received an anonymous tip that you were being coerced into signing fraudulent liability waivers tonight."

Clara opened her mouth to speak, but her throat felt dry. She glanced down at the table, where the white envelope, the brass key, and the federal warrant lay side by side.

"I wasn't coerced," Clara finally whispered, her voice steadying as she looked directly at Agent Miller. "I was framed. And I have the documents to prove it."

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp of betrayal, stepping forward as if to silence her daughter. The two junior agents immediately moved in, positioning themselves between Eleanor and Clara.

"Step back, ma'am," Agent Miller instructed firmly. He turned back to Clara. "Where are those documents?"

Clara pointed a trembling finger directly at the white envelope resting beneath the federal warrant. "Right there. But that’s only the beginning. The real proof of what happened to my father is locked in the Geneva vault."

Marcus pulled the brass key from his pocket and held it out toward Agent Miller. "And I happen to have the key."
