Chapter 9 - The Federal Intervention

The screech of tires cut through the quiet afternoon air as a second vehicle—a county sheriff’s cruiser with its light bar flashing mutely—swung wide around the bend and slammed to a halt behind the federal sedan. Dust billowed across the manicured lawn, coating the polished paint of both cars.

Agent Vance paused, his hand hovering near his hip where a service weapon was holstered under his suit jacket. From the passenger side of the cruiser, a rugged-looking sheriff's deputy stepped out, adjusting his wide-brimmed hat, while the driver's side door opened to reveal a local detective Maya recognized from her hometown precinct.

"Major Sterling?" the detective called out, stepping briskly toward the porch with a clipboard in hand. "Detective Miller, local jurisdiction. We received an emergency dispatch regarding a multi-party property dispute and suspected title fraud at this address."

Maya stood her ground on the top step, the leather attaché case heavy in her left hand. "You're a little late for a dispute call, Detective. This is a federal matter now. The Inspector General’s office is already handling the financial crimes division."

Agent Vance flashed his credentials again to the local detective, establishing immediate federal jurisdiction over the state-level property fraud. "DOD Inspector General. We’ve locked the offshore accounts tied to Vanguard Holdings. The local title transfers executed by Miller & Vance are already flagged under federal emergency statutes for military asset protection."

Detective Miller stopped at the base of the stairs, looking from the federal agents to Maya, and finally past them into the open double doors of the lodge. Inside, Arthur stood motionless on the staircase, looking like a ghost haunting a ruin he had built himself.

"Well, that simplifies things," Detective Miller said, pulling a set of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "Because we didn't just come out here for a property dispute. We received a bench warrant request fifteen minutes ago from the state attorney general's office regarding a forged power of attorney and elder financial exploitation."

Before the detective could mount the steps, Arthur suddenly lurched forward from the shadows of the staircase. He didn't run; instead, he stumbled down the remaining steps, his face twisted in a mask of bitter, unrepentant defiance.

"You're ruining our family!" Arthur screamed, pointing a trembling finger directly at Maya as he reached the foyer floor. "She’s a soldier! She doesn't even know how to live in a normal home! She’s bringing war back into a peaceful house!"

"This house was peaceful until you invited a syndicate of thieves to loot it while I was deployed," Maya said, stepping down to meet him at eye level. She didn't flinch as he approached the threshold.

"Arrest her too!" Arthur shrieked to the local detective, losing the last remnants of his dignity. "She’s an active-duty combat veteran with documented psychological trauma! Her judgment is impaired! She’s a danger to herself and everyone around her!"

Detective Miller stepped past Arthur, ignoring the frantic ranting, and clicked the handcuffs onto the older man’s wrists with practiced efficiency. The metal cuffs snapped shut with a sharp, definitive click that echoed through the empty lodge.

As Arthur was led backward out the double doors, his green knit sweater snagging briefly on the wooden frame, he fixed Maya with one final, venomous glare.

"You think you won?" Arthur snarled as the federal agents flanked him. "You think you're safe now that the house is yours? Check your secure military portal, Major. The audit didn't just find stolen money. It found out who helped your father authorize the initial transfers."

Maya froze. Her hand tightened on the handle of the attaché case.
