Chapter 10 - The Secret Accomplice

The heavy click of the handcuffs echoing off the lodge’s wooden floors felt hollow as Arthur was led down the front steps toward the waiting cruiser. His parting words hung in the sunlit air like poison gas, dissolving whatever satisfaction Maya might have felt in seeing her father brought to justice.
She didn't move. She stood on the threshold, the leather attaché case heavy in her hand, watching the federal agents bundle Arthur into the back of the unmarked sedan while Detective Miller secured the paperwork with Agent Vance.
Check your secure military portal, her father had snarled. The audit didn't just find stolen money. It found out who helped your father authorize the initial transfers.
Arthur wasn't smart enough to execute an international wire transfer to a Cayman Islands shell corporation on his own. He wasn't sophisticated enough to draft a legally airtight, fraudulent power of attorney that bypassed military deployment protections without inside access to the Department of Defense personnel database. He had had help—insider help with a military clearance level high enough to access active-duty deployment rosters.
Maya dropped the attaché case onto the porch floor. With trembling fingers, she pulled her encrypted tablet from her uniform pocket, bypassed the biometric lock, and tapped directly into the internal DOD secure audit portal. The screen flickered, loading a restricted-access PDF file labeled Designated Beneficiary & Proxy Amendment History.
Agent Vance walked back up the porch steps, noticing the sudden change in her demeanor. "Major? Is there a problem? We have the primary suspect in custody, and Vance’s law firm is being raided as we speak."
"My father didn't act alone," Maya said, her voice dangerously quiet, her eyes glued to the scrolling data on the tablet screen. "He didn't have the clearance to access my deployment routing codes or my primary healthcare proxy assignments. Someone inside the command structure fed him the credentials."
Agent Vance’s professional demeanor vanished, replaced instantly by hardened military vigilance. "An insider threat? On active duty?"
Maya scrolled down past her father’s name, past Richard Vance’s legal signature, down to the digital cryptographic stamp at the very bottom of the proxy amendment form—the metadata signature required to validate any emergency medical and financial override during an active deployment zone.
The name attached to the digital signature wasn't a civilian lawyer. It was a military rank and a name she knew better than her own.
Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sterling.
Her uncle. The man who had organized her welcome-home dinner, the man who had stood in her living room holding a glass of wine while her father stole her home.
Maya looked up at Agent Vance, her face completely drained of color. "My uncle. He’s stationed at the Pentagon's personnel command."

Before Agent Vance could respond, his secure radio crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by the dispatcher's urgent voice. "Attention all units, we have an active breach at the Pentagon logistics server. A high-level clearance profile under Lieutenant Colonel Sterling has just initiated an emergency data wipe of all overseas asset files."
