Chapter 6 - The Offshore Trail

Maya stared down at the bank statement resting against the hardwood floor. The figures swam before her eyes—hundreds of thousands of dollars, her entire combat deployment savings and her pre-war inheritance, funneled out of her domestic account and into an entity registered in the Cayman Islands under a name she had never heard of: Vanguard Holdings LLC.
The front door slammed downstairs as Marcus and Olivia fled to their car, the sound of tires screeching on the gravel driveway echoing through the open double doors. Richard Vance had already vanished, abandoning his briefcase on the foyer table in his haste to escape federal jurisdiction. Only Arthur remained, standing halfway up the grand staircase, looking like a cornered animal waiting for the final blow.
Maya picked up the paper, her fingers trembling slightly—not from fear, but from a cold, blinding fury that threatened to consume her rational thought. She stood up, turning to face her father. The restraint she had maintained since crossing the threshold was wearing dangerously thin.
"Vanguard Holdings," Maya read aloud, her voice dangerously quiet. "You didn't just steal my house, Arthur. You cleaned out my entire life savings. Every cent I earned while dodging mortars in Kunduz."
Arthur gripped the wooden banister, his knuckles white. The defiant glare he had worn earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a pathetic, whining self-justification. "It was an investment, Maya! The market was crashing, and I saw an opportunity to triple your money in real estate development syndicates. It was for your own benefit!"
"My benefit?" Maya took two deliberate steps down the stairs, closing the distance between them. "You liquidated my future to bail out your failing retirement portfolio and pay off Olivia’s gambling debts. Don't you dare talk to me about my benefit."
"I am your father!" Arthur roared, a sudden, desperate surge of false authority flashing in his eyes. "I brought you into this world! I fed you, I clothed you, and I signed the permission slips that let you enlist! You owe me everything you are!"
"I owe you nothing," Maya said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "The military taught me how to identify enemy combatants, how to dismantle threats, and how to protect what matters. You taught me that family is just another word for an insider threat."
Arthur flinched as if struck physically. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could form another lie, the shrill ring of his cell phone pierced the quiet of the lodge. The screen lit up on the small table near the stairs, displaying an incoming international call with a Cayman Islands area code.
Arthur lunged for the phone, but Maya was faster. With combat-honed reflexes, she snatched the device off the table before his trembling fingers could reach it. She swiped the screen to speaker mode and held it up between them.
"Mr. Sterling," a crisp, accented voice spoke through the speaker. "We’ve received the emergency liquidation tranche for the Vanguard portfolio. However, federal flag protocols have locked the destination routing. We require immediate secondary authorization from the primary account holder to clear the transfer. Are you ready to input the override PIN?"
Maya looked straight into her father’s terrified, bloodshot eyes. She didn't hang up. Instead, she pressed her thumb against the phone's microphone to block the noise and leaned in close.
"This is Major Maya Sterling," she said clearly into the receiver. "The account holder is deceased in the eyes of this transaction. Freeze all assets, flag the routing numbers for federal audit, and prepare a complete subpoena packet for my JAG investigator."

The voice on the other end gasped, followed by a frantic click as the international line went dead.
