Chapter 11 - The Pentagon Breach

The static on Agent Vance’s secure radio hissed loudly before the dispatcher’s voice repeated the warning, cutting through the afternoon silence like a siren.

"All units, be advised: target profile indicates an internal wipe protocol originating from a secure terminal in the Pentagon logistics annex. Clearance level active under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sterling."

Agent Vance’s hand dropped instinctively to his sidearm holster. He stared at Maya, the gravity of the situation crashing down around them with crushing force. "Your uncle isn't just an accomplice, Major. He’s running the clearinghouse from inside the Department of Defense itself."

Maya didn't panic. The cold, tactical focus that had kept her alive in combat zones locked into place. Her mind raced past the betrayal, past the anger, focusing entirely on the objective. If Thomas managed to wipe the logistics server, every single digital paper trail proving the conspiracy—from the fraudulent power of attorney to the offshore wire transfers—would vanish into the ether, leaving her legally defenseless once more.

"He’s using the emergency override protocol," Maya said sharply, tapping furiously on her encrypted tablet. "He has thirty seconds before the purge cycle locks down the mainframe archives. If he completes the wipe, the courts won't have enough evidence to hold either of them."

"Can you intercept it?" Agent Vance asked, pulling his own secure satellite phone from his pocket to dial the Pentagon cyber-command operations desk.

"Not from a civilian uplink," Maya replied, her jaw tightening. "I need a secure military node. The encrypted terminal in my command duffel bag."

She turned on her heel, leaving the attaché case on the porch, and rushed back through the open double doors into the sunlit modern lodge living room. The boxes, the broken wine glass on the floor, the lingering scent of stale alcohol—all of it faded into background noise. She strode directly to the canvas duffel bag sitting by the stairs, dropped to her knees, and unzipped the heavy-duty side pocket.

From the depths of the bag, she pulled out a ruggedized military-grade field terminal—a heavy, matte-black device equipped with quantum-encrypted satellite uplink capabilities. She slammed it down onto the glass coffee table, flicked the power toggle, and jammed her cryptographic thumb drive into the primary port.

"Connecting to the tactical grid," Maya muttered, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.

Behind her, Agent Vance stood in the doorway, relaying coordinates to the federal cyber-crimes unit. "We have a Class-4 data breach in progress at the Pentagon logistics annex. Authorize an immediate terminal lockdown on user profile Sterling-T-04."

"Negative on the lockdown," Maya said, her eyes locked on the scrolling green command lines of her terminal screen. "If they lock the terminal externally, the auto-purge protocol completes automatically. I have to breach his firewall from the inside and inject a quarantine virus before he hits the final enter key."

A progress bar appeared on the small screen: Data Purge at 78%... 82%... 87%...

"Come on," Maya whispered, sweat beading on her forehead as she executed a bypass script through her deployment encryption key. "Open the backdoor."

The progress bar froze at 94%. A red warning box flashed across the screen: ACCESS DENIED: SECURE ADMIN CREDENTIALS REQUIRED.

Thomas Sterling had locked her out at the final firewall.
