Chapter 7 - The Siege at Midnight

The sound of heavy boots echoing up the grand staircase sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the room. Julian reacted instantly, moving with a speed that belied his calm exterior. He vaulted across the library floor and slammed the double mahogany doors shut, turning the heavy brass lock just as a violent pounding vibrated against the wood.

“Federal agents! Open the door!” a stern, disembodied voice bellowed from the hallway.

Valeria sat frozen in the leather armchair, the maroon fabric stark against the dark upholstery. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. Her eyes were fixed on the door, terror paralyzing her limbs. The flash drive on the white dinner plate seemed to pulse under the amber glow of the banker’s lamp.

“Julian, what do we do?” Valeria whispered, panic clawing at her throat. “They’ll arrest me! They have the drive!”

Helena didn't panic. She calmly reached into her beige blazer, pulled out a heavy gold-plated fountain pen, and slid the white dinner plate across the desk toward Valeria.

“They aren't here for you, Valeria,” Helena said, her voice eerily calm as she unlatched a hidden panel in the back of the mahogany bookcase. “They’re here for the primary server hidden behind this wall. The server your ex-husband installed without your father’s knowledge to siphon funds directly into offshore accounts.”

Julian grabbed Valeria by the shoulders, pulling her out of the armchair and hauling her to her feet. His stubble-shadowed face was tense, his gray suit jacket rumpled from the chaos.

“Listen to me, Val,” Julian urged, his voice fierce and steady. “You’re going to take that flash drive and walk out through the service tunnel behind the library shelves. Helena has already arranged safe passage to your father’s secure location in the city.”

“And you?” Valeria demanded, her eyes wide with sudden realization as she gripped his forearms. “Where are you going, Julian?”

“I’m going to open that door,” Julian said, offering a ghost of a smile that didn't reach his eyes. “Someone has to stall them long enough for you to get the evidence to the prosecutor before Mark’s federal contacts seize the local precinct.”

“No! I won’t leave you here to take the blame!” Valeria cried, trying to pull away toward the door.

With a heavy thud, the wooden frame of the library doors splintered as the federal agents began forcing the lock from the outside. Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Valeria around the waist and shoved her bodily into the dark, narrow crawlspace behind the rotating bookshelf just as Helena triggered the locking mechanism.

The heavy mahogany wall rotated inward with a silent, oiled click, plunging Valeria into absolute darkness, save for the faint glow of the flash drive clutched tightly in her trembling hand.
