Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Lies

The air in the library grew stifling, heavy with the weight of unsaid truths and impending ruin. Valeria stared at Julian, the blond man she had trusted implicitly through the darkest months of her separation, realizing that his steady, protective demeanor had been nothing more than the practiced calm of a man managing a liability.
“Explain what, Julian?” Valeria’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal blend of fear and betrayal. “Explain why your name is on these documents? Explain why Helena is sitting at my father’s desk like she owns the world?”
Julian’s jaw tightened, his stubble casting dark shadows across his pale skin as he looked away from her piercing gaze. “I tried to protect you, Valeria. When Mark started bleeding the accounts dry to fund his offshore ventures, I used my own firm’s capital to cover the shortfall so the federal auditors wouldn't trace it back to your personal inheritance.”
“You committed financial fraud to cover for my ex-husband?” Valeria screamed, the restraint finally shattering as tears welled in her eyes. She lunged forward, grabbing a fistful of his gray suit jacket and shaking him with unexpected ferocity. “Are you out of your mind? You’ve risked your entire career—everything you built!”
“And I would do it again,” Julian whispered fiercely, his hands finally coming up to gently grip her wrists, stopping her assault without hurting her. His eyes were desperate, filled with an agonizing sincerity that made her breath hitch. “Because if the DOJ found out that Mark used your digital signature to authorize those wire transfers, you would be the one sitting in a federal penitentiary right now, not him.”
Helena cleared her throat loudly from behind the mahogany desk, breaking the intense intimacy of the moment. She picked up a thin, cream-colored document and tapped it against the polished wood surface.
“Touching display of chivalry, truly,” Helena remarked, her voice dripping with dry sarcasm as she dangled the gold earrings with a dismissive tilt of her head. “Unfortunately, sentimentality doesn't satisfy federal restitution laws. Mark didn't just embezzle corporate funds. He liquidated your father’s entire manufacturing empire while your father was recovering from his heart surgery last year.”
Valeria dropped her hands from Julian’s jacket as if she had been burned. She stumbled backward, her maroon dress swirling around her legs, until she caught herself against the edge of the heavy desk.
“That’s impossible,” Valeria breathed, staring blankly at the stacks of paperwork. “My father told me the business failed due to market downturns. He shielded me from it.”

“Your father shielded you because you were already drowning in your own fabricated reality,” Helena said quietly, standing up from the chair. She walked around the desk, stopping just inches from Valeria. She reached into her beige blazer pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, holding it up between two fingers. “Mark used your signature, Valeria. But you provided the bank account numbers. And right here on this drive is the digital proof that you signed off on the final asset transfer the night before you filed for divorce.”
