Chapter 12 - Darkness in the Citadel

The emergency red backup lights clicked on a second later, bathing the interrogation room in a sickly, crimson glow. Outside the reinforced glass windows, the entire federal building’s alarm system began to wail in a high-pitched, automated shriek. Director Vance drew his service weapon from its holster, his eyes darting toward the heavy steel exit door as the heavy thud of an automated lockdown mechanism engaged overhead.

“We’ve been compromised,” Vance barked, pressing his hand against his encrypted radio earpiece. “Control, status report! What’s happening to the main server grid?”

The only response from the earpiece was a harsh burst of static, followed by a synthetic, automated voice repeating a single, chilling phrase: “System purge initiated. All local files transferring to external destination.”

Valeria stood frozen in the center of the crimson-lit room, the maroon fabric of her dress casting deep shadows around her feet. The revelation about her mother’s death echoed relentlessly inside her mind, drowning out the blaring alarms and the frantic shouting of the federal agents. Her mother hadn't just been a victim of a broken heart; she had been murdered to secure a financial empire built on lies.

“The flash drive,” Helena whispered urgently, grabbing Valeria by the shoulder and shaking her gently. “Valeria, you still have the master drive from the estate library in your blanket pocket. If they complete the system purge, that drive is the only physical offline copy of the decryption keys left on earth!”

Valeria blinked, snapping out of her trance. She reached into the pocket of the wool blanket and pulled out the small black flash drive, clutching it tightly in her fist until the plastic casing dug sharply into her palm.

Her father slowly lowered himself back into his metal chair, his breathing shallow and rapid. He looked older, defeated, the fierce authority he had commanded at the restaurant completely vanished.

“It won’t matter, Helena,” her father murmured, staring blankly at the stainless steel table. “The moment the transfer hits ninety-nine percent, the primary vault at the Swiss bank will trigger an automated detonation protocol designed to erase every financial footprint tied to our family name. Everything burns.”

“Not if we stop it at the terminal,” Valeria said, her voice dropping into a tone of chilling, unbreakable resolve. She looked directly at Director Vance, who was aiming his weapon toward the hallway door. “Director, where is the physical terminal connected to the central routing node?”

Vance stared at her, stunned by the sudden transformation in the young woman. “It’s in the subterranean communications bunker three levels below us. But the elevator shaft is locked down due to the security breach!”

“Then we take the service stairs,” Valeria declared, ripping off the heavy wool blanket and letting it drop to the floor. She stood tall in her bare feet, the ruined maroon one-shoulder dress swaying as she turned toward the heavy steel door.

Julian’s muffled voice suddenly rang out from the adjacent holding cell through the speaker grill in the wall.

“Valeria! Don’t go down there!” Julian screamed, pounding frantically against the concrete partition. “Mark isn't just stealing the money! He’s waiting in the bunker with a dead-man’s switch!”
