Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Estate

The drive upstate was a blur of gray asphalt and freezing rain that pelted against the windshield of Julian’s sedan. Valeria sat in the passenger seat, the maroon fabric of her dress tucked tightly around her knees, staring fixedly at the brass key resting in her open palm. The metal had long since absorbed the heat of her skin, yet it still felt chillingly cold. Julian drove with one hand, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, his blond stubble making him look far older than his thirty-four years.

“You’ve been uncharacteristically quiet since we left the restaurant, Julian,” Valeria murmured, her voice barely audible over the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers.

“I’m thinking about what your father said,” Julian replied without taking his eyes off the slick road ahead. “About your ex-husband. You thought the divorce was because he fell out of love with you. What if it was actually to keep you from being indicted for corporate fraud?”

Valeria sat up straight, turning to glare at him through the dim dashboard illumination. “That is absurd! Mark was a mid-level analyst. He didn't even have access to the primary ledger accounts!”

“Analyst, right,” Julian sighed, navigating a sharp turn that led them off the highway and onto the winding, tree-lined lane of the estate. “Valeria, wake up. Why do you think your father cut you off financially the exact week your divorce was finalized? He wasn't punishing your independence. He was severing your legal ties to Mark’s corporate shell companies before the federal investigators froze every asset bearing your shared last name.”

The car crunched over the gravel driveway, the monolithic silhouette of the Victorian estate looming out of the misty darkness. Its tall, gothic windows were pitch black, resembling hollow eye sockets staring down at them with silent judgment. Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. The narrative she had built over the last three days—that she was a discarded wife replaced by a younger, more sophisticated woman in a green blazer—was violently fracturing at the seams.

Julian parked the car beneath the rotting timber carport, cutting the engine. The sudden silence inside the cabin was deafening, broken only by the steady drum of rain hitting the roof.

“Are you coming?” Julian asked softly, reaching for the door handle.

Valeria clutched her light-colored handbag to her chest like a shield. “That woman at the restaurant… the one with the dangling gold earrings. Who is she, Julian? If she’s not my father’s new lover, then who is she?”

Julian paused, his hand resting on the latch. He looked at Valeria with an expression of profound reluctance, a look that terrified her more than any anger ever could.

“She’s the lead forensic forensic accountant hired by the Department of Justice,” Julian said quietly. “And she’s your ex-husband’s legal representative.”

Valeria’s hand slipped, and the heavy brass key dropped with a metallic clatter onto the rubber floor mat, plunging them both into a chilling uncertainty.
