Chapter 8: The Vanguard Reveal

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the gravel driveway of the seized estate, but Marcus felt only a paralyzing, bone-chilling cold. He stared down at the Department of Defense crest embossed on the heavy dossier in his hands, his fingers trembling so violently that the thick paper rustled loudly in the quiet air.
“General Vance…” Marcus whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. “Arthur Vance… he died in a classified transport crash ten years ago.”
“He faked his military retirement to transition his entire private portfolio into a deep-tier sovereign fund, and he appointed me as sole trustee until his daughter reached thirty,” Christopher Vance stated smoothly, adjusting his tie as he stood beside Eleanor. “A fund, Mr. Sterling, that currently holds controlling debt over every major manufacturing asset in your family’s portfolio.”
Helen marched out of the front doors, her face twisted in absolute fury as she realized her son was breaking down in front of their destroyers.
“Stop groveling to these swindlers, Marcus!” Helen hissed, grabbing her son’s shoulder and yanking him backward. She glared daggers at Eleanor. “You think a few forged military papers and a corrupt corporate lawyer are going to steal our legacy? My grandfather founded this city’s shipping docks! We have political immunity!”
Eleanor let out a quiet, cold sigh, stepping closer to her former mother-in-law without a trace of hesitation.
“Your grandfather’s shipping docks were seized by the federal government for international smuggling back in 1974, Helen. Your entire family fortune was built on money laundered through offshore accounts that my father’s division investigated for decades,” Eleanor said, her voice completely even. “You weren’t nobility. You were just squatters waiting for the eviction notice.”
Helen opened her mouth to scream a torrent of insults, but the chief bailiff stepped between them, holding up a digital signature pad.
“Mrs. Sterling senior, your time in the foyer has expired. You need to sign the property handover acknowledgment right now, or you’ll be escorted off the grounds in handcuffs,” the bailiff instructed firmly.
Helen looked around desperately, searching the perimeter for allies, security guards, or influential friends. The gates at the end of the long driveway were blocked by two police cruisers, and a small crowd of reporters and paparazzi had already begun gathering behind the wrought-iron bars, cameras flashing relentlessly in the afternoon light. The empire was gone, exposed and dismantled in less than twenty-four hours.
Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor, his arrogant facade completely shattered, replaced by a pathetic, hollow shell of a man.
“What do you want from us, Eleanor?” Marcus whispered, tears finally pooling in the corners of his eyes—not from genuine remorse, but from the unbearable agony of his public humiliation. “Do you want us on the street? Do you want to ruin our lives completely?”
Eleanor looked down at him, her dark eyes entirely devoid of malice, which somehow made her stare infinitely more terrifying than any scream.

“I don’t want your lives, Marcus. I just want what was always mine,” Eleanor said softly. She turned her back on them, opened the door of the town car, and slid into the leather seat.
As the car began to roll forward down the long driveway, Christopher Vance lingered behind for just a second, leaning in close to whisper one final warning into Marcus’s ear.
