Chapter 10: The Trojan Horse

The encrypted data streams scrolling across Christopher Vance’s tablet revealed a chilling financial labyrinth that stretched straight from London to the heart of Vanguard Capital. Eleanor leaned forward, her dark eyes scanning the complex web of offshore accounts, debt transfers, and hidden equity swaps that Julian Sterling had meticulously constructed over the past thirty-six months.

“Explain,” Eleanor commanded quietly, her voice cutting through the tense air of the moving car.

“Julian didn’t just distance himself from Marcus and Helen; he systematically bought up their bad debt through third-party investment funds,” Christopher explained, his fingers frantically tapping the glass screen to isolate specific routing numbers. “Every reckless loan Marcus took out to fund his luxury lifestyle, every failing venture Helen backed—Julian was the anonymous creditor buying those notes at a discount.”

Eleanor’s breath caught as the ultimate puzzle piece clicked into place in her mind. “He was bleeding them dry from the inside out, waiting for the right moment to execute a hostile takeover of the entire Sterling estate.”

“Precisely,” Christopher nodded grimly. “And when you froze Vanguard’s liquidity this morning, you didn’t just destroy Marcus and Helen—you inadvertently handed Julian the exact legal trigger he needed to seize the remaining unencumbered assets under senior creditor priority clauses.”

Eleanor stared out the window into the dark, rain-slicked streets, a cold realization washing over her. Julian hadn’t been absent out of indifference; he had used her marriage to Marcus as a smoke screen to execute his own generational coup. While Marcus and Helen were busy trying to crush her spirit with ice water and insults, Julian was quietly positioning himself to inherit the entire empire once the dust settled.

“Where is Julian right now?” Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

Christopher checked his terminal’s flight tracker and geolocated security feeds. “His private jet touched down at Teterboro Airport twenty minutes ago. He’s heading straight for the Vanguard corporate tower right now.”

Eleanor let out a slow, steady breath, her resilient spirit surging back with renewed fury. They thought she was just a pawn in a family game of thrones, but they had severely underestimated her tactical reach.

“Reroute the car to the Vanguard tower,” Eleanor instructed calmly, pulling her phone from her pocket. “It’s time to show Julian who actually owns the board.”

Christopher dialed a secure line, his face tightening into a hardened scowl. “What’s our play when we get there? Julian holds the senior creditor notes on the European manufacturing plants. If he files the injunction before we reach the executive suite, he legally blocks our domestic asset consolidation.”

Eleanor smiled faintly, a terrifying look of absolute confidence in her dark eyes.

“He can’t file an injunction if his primary funding source has already been reclassified as national security contraband,” Eleanor said smoothly.

Before Christopher could ask what she meant, her phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted text message from an unlisted military number.
