Chapter 6: The Queen’s Downfall

Helen Sterling marched down the center of the boardroom aisle, her expensive black silk dress rustling sharply with every purposeful step. Her face was locked in a mask of haughty aristocratic disdain, though a faint tremor in her heavily powdered jaw betrayed her internal panic. She glared past the security guards holding her son and fixed her sharp eyes directly on Eleanor sitting comfortably at the head of the table.

“What is the meaning of this absolute circus?” Helen demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room like a whip. “Eleanor, you ungrateful little parasite, stand up this instant and undo whatever petty administrative tantrum you’ve thrown this morning!”

Eleanor didn’t move an inch. She leaned back slightly in her leather chair, resting her hands calmly on the armrests as she met her mother-in-law’s fiery gaze.

“Sit down, Helen,” Eleanor said, her voice completely calm, devoid of any traditional deference or fear. “You’re no longer a board member, and technically, you’re trespassing in a private corporate facility.”

Helen let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, turning her head toward the paralyzed executives sitting around the table.

“Are you all out of your minds? Have you let this emotional girl intimidate you?” Helen snapped, slamming her designer handbag onto the mahogany surface. “Marcus, tell these idiots to throw her out into the street where she belongs!”

Marcus slumped heavily in his chair, his head bowed, the fight seemingly beaten out of him for the moment. He didn’t look up to meet his mother’s eyes.

Christopher Vance stepped smoothly into Helen’s line of sight, holding a crisp, blue-backed legal summons.

“Mrs. Sterling senior, you might want to look over these personal liability injunctions before you start making demands,” Christopher stated evenly, handing the document directly to her.

Helen snatched the paper from the attorney’s hand, her eyes scanning the dense legal jargon with mounting fury. Her hands began to shake violently, the crisp paper rustling loudly in the quiet room.

“Embezzlement? Tax evasion through offshore shell accounts?” Helen hissed, her voice rising an octave as she stared at the itemized charges. “This is a malicious fabrication! My family name carries centuries of respect in this city! No court would ever dare touch my estate!”

“Your estate, Helen, was funded entirely by the same fraudulent corporate loans that kept Sterling Holdings afloat,” Eleanor said, finally standing up from her chair. She walked slowly around the table until she stood just inches away from her former mother-in-law, towering over her with cold, undeniable authority. “Every single painting on your mansion walls, every antique in your drawing room, and every stock certificate in your private portfolio has been placed under federal seizure as of twenty minutes ago.”

Helen’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. She raised her hand, her fingers curling into a vicious claw, aiming a hard slap directly across Eleanor’s face.

Before Helen’s hand could move an inch, one of the security guards stepped forward with lightning speed, catching Helen’s wrist in an iron grip and holding her arm suspended mid-air.

“Don’t touch me, you filthy animal!” Helen screamed, losing all her remaining dignity as she thrashed against the guard’s hold.

Eleanor looked down at her with a look of pure, unadulterated pity.

“That’s twice in twenty-four hours someone in this family tried to use physical force,” Eleanor whispered coldly. “And just like yesterday, you’re about to find out it was the worst mistake of your life.”
