Chapter 14: The Final Reckoning

Christopher Vance lowered the satellite phone slowly, his fingers tightening around the device until his knuckles turned white. He looked up at Eleanor, hesitation clouding his usually impenetrable expression.

“What happened, Christopher?” Eleanor asked, her voice calm but demanding immediate clarity.

“That was the county sheriff’s office,” Christopher said, choosing his words carefully. “Marcus and Helen… they ignored the federal eviction orders and snuck back into the ancestral estate through the old servants’ quarters late tonight.”

Eleanor frowned slightly, a knot of unease tightening in her chest. “What were they thinking? The property is heavily monitored by federal marshals.”

“They weren’t thinking rationally. According to the dispatch report, Marcus had a breakdown when he realized his private offshore accounts were completely wiped out. He blamed Helen for forcing him into the marriage and for orchestrating the fraudulent financial structures that brought them down,” Christopher explained, swallowing hard. “An argument broke out in the grand foyer—right on the exact spot where the wedding dress was drenched in ice water yesterday.”

Eleanor felt a cold shiver run down her spine as the grim symmetry of the situation settled over her. “And?”

“Marcus set fire to the library curtains in a blind rage, intending to burn the entire estate down rather than let the federal government seize it. The fire spread rapidly through the dry woodwork before the marshals could breach the reinforced doors,” Christopher said grimly. “Helen is currently in critical condition at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital with severe smoke inhalation. But Marcus… Marcus refused to leave the burning mansion.”

Eleanor stood frozen, processing the chaotic, tragic end of the family that had tried to destroy her. Greed, arrogance, and an insatiable lust for control had finally consumed them from within, leaving nothing behind but ash and ruin.

“Did the marshals get him out?” Eleanor asked quietly, a profound sense of melancholy washing over her.

“They pulled him out just before the western wing collapsed,” Christopher answered, stepping toward the private elevator. “He’s currently in police custody, heavily sedated, awaiting federal arraignment on charges of arson and domestic terrorism.”

Eleanor turned back to the massive glass window, watching the rain continue to fall over the glittering city skyline. The nightmare was truly over. The chains of her past had been broken, burned, and swept away forever.

“Let’s go, Christopher,” Eleanor said softly, picking up her leather coat from the back of the chair.

“Where to, Eleanor?” Christopher asked, holding the elevator doors open for her.

Eleanor walked toward the exit, a small, genuine smile finally gracing her lips for the first time in years.

“Away from here.”
