Chapter 8 - The Warning

The cell phone slipped from David's fingers, landing softly on the thick rug without completing the emergency call. The tension in the library spiked instantly, suffocating every breath. Sarah looked down at Arthur with a mixture of pity and dread, while Ethan pressed close to his mother's side, sensing that the nightmare was far from over.
"What are you talking about, Arthur?" David asked, his voice barely a whisper as he knelt beside the sofa. "You need a doctor. You've been locked in that room for fifty years."
"Fifty years," Arthur repeated, a bitter, humorless smile touching his cracked lips. "And in all that time, Julian never told you the real reason he built that wall, did he? It wasn't just about the money. The money was gone long before the bricks went up."
David slowly turned his head to look across the room at his father. Julian was still staring at the floor, but his shoulders were trembling violently, his face buried in his hands.
"Dad?" David demanded, his voice rising in panic. "What is he talking about? What else did you lie about?"
"He didn't lie about the greed," Arthur wheezed, his chest heaving as he fought for air. "Julian was always weak. He wanted the estate, yes. But the night he drugged me... I wasn't the only one in this house. There was someone else. Someone our father brought here."
"Stop it, Arthur! Shut your mouth!" Julian suddenly screamed, scrambling to his feet with surprising agility for an old man. He lunged across the room, his face twisted in absolute terror, aiming straight for Arthur's throat.
David reacted with lightning speed, tackling his father to the ground before he could reach the sofa. They crashed hard against the floorboards, a tangle of limbs and muffled curses, until David pinned Julian's arms behind his back.
"Stay down!" David roared, his eyes blazing with fury. "You touch him again, and I swear I'll let the police handle you right here!"
Arthur lay back against the cushions, breathing heavily, a triumphant, haunting glint in his sunken eyes. He pointed a trembling, skeletal finger directly at the ornate fireplace on the far wall of the library.

"Look behind the family portrait above the mantle," Arthur whispered, his voice echoing in the silent room. "That's where our father hid the real inheritance. And that's why Julian kept me alive all these years... because he could never find the combination to open it."
