Chapter 5 - The Stolen Legacy

The confession hung in the dusty air of the library, heavy and poisonous, freezing everyone in their tracks. Ethan clutched his mother's skirt, sensing the seismic shift in the foundation of their lives. David slowly loosened his grip on Julian's jacket, letting the older man slide down against the bookshelf until he sat defeated on the floor, his head bowed in shame.
"Arthur," David repeated the name as if tasting something foul. "Uncle Arthur. The one who supposedly vanished during a business trip to Europe fifty years ago. The one whose inheritance you used to buy this very house, to start our company, to fund everything."
"He didn't vanish," Julian mumbled, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "We had a fight. A terrible, bitter fight over the family fortune after our father died. He was going to give it all away to charity, to ruin us. So I... I offered him a drink. In this very room. I slipped enough sedative into his scotch to knock out an elephant."
"And you built a wall around him?" Sarah asked, her voice shaking with a revulsion that defied words. "You walled him up alive while he was unconscious?"
"When he woke up, the renovations had already begun," Julian defended himself weakly, looking up with tear-filled, desperate eyes. "It was only supposed to be temporary. Just until I could figure out the legal transfer of the deeds. But then the panic set in, the guilt... and the years just slipped away. Every time I tried to confess, I looked at what we had, at you, David, at your future, and I just... I kept the bricks in place."
"You monster," David whispered, stepping away from his father as if he were carrying a plague.
Suddenly, a strange, wet sound echoed from the dark alcove. It was a choked, desperate rattle coming from behind the yellow gag. Arthur was straining against the ropes, his body shaking violently as his eyes rolled back toward the ceiling.

"Dad! Look at him!" Ethan screamed, pointing into the darkness. "He's stopping breathing!"
