Chapter 4 - The Family Resemblance

The bright beam of the flashlight illuminated every horrifying detail of the captive's face, casting long, jittery shadows against the rough plaster walls of the hidden cell. Ethan edged closer, squinting into the darkness, a cold knot of dread forming in his stomach as he finally recognized the distinct shape of the nose and the familiar curve of the jawline. It wasn't just a stranger; the man sitting bound and gagged in the darkness looked hauntingly, undeniably like Julian.

"He looks like..." Ethan started, his voice trailing off as he looked up at his grandfather with wide, frightened eyes.

"Shut up, boy," Julian hissed, lunging forward with a sudden, desperate speed that caught everyone off guard, his hand swatting the flashlight from David's grip.

The heavy metal casing hit the Persian rug with a dull thud, plunging the alcove back into deep, terrifying shadow. David reacted instantly, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his suit jacket and shoving him back against the mahogany bookshelf with a force that sent a cascade of leather-bound volumes tumbling to the floor.

"What is wrong with you?" David roared, his face contorted with a mixture of rage and profound betrayal. "That's a human being in there! That man is dying!"

"You don't understand what you've undone," Julian gasped, struggling against David's grip, his expensive suit tearing slightly at the shoulder. "If you untie him, if you let him out of this room, everything we have built, everything this family owns, vanishes in a single afternoon. He will take it all."

"Who is he, Julian?" Sarah demanded, her voice cutting through the chaos like a razor. She had moved to the edge of the dark opening, her fingers gripping the splintered wood as she stared into the blackness. "Tell us right now, or I swear to God I am calling the police and telling them you are an accomplice to kidnapping."

"He's not a kidnapping victim," Julian whispered, his fierce resistance suddenly collapsing into a pathetic, trembling slump. He stared at the floor, refusing to meet his son's burning gaze. "He's the rightful owner of this estate. My older brother, Arthur."
