Chapter 1 - The First Crack

The heavy library air felt instantly different, carrying the damp, metallic scent of a long-abandoned cellar that had somehow found its way behind the old oak paneling. Ten-year-old Ethan stood frozen in the center of the room, his small fingers still tightly clamped around the worn wooden mallet. His chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths as his blue sweater snagged slightly on a loose sliver of mahogany. A few feet away, David stood with his hand outstretched, his dark hair ruffled and his blue shirt rumpled from the sudden dash across the Persian rug.

"Ethan, stop," David whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of sheer panic and sudden authority.

"What happened?" Sarah asked, her brown hair falling across her white blouse as she stepped closer, her eyes darting from the splintered wood to the boy's pale face.

"He says there’s something behind it," David snapped back, his tone sharp and accusatory, his jaw tightening as he glared down at his son. "Ethan, put that mallet down right now. You have no business touching these walls. We've talked about this."

"I heard breathing, Dad," Ethan protested, his voice cracking with a fierce, stubborn defiance that caught David off guard. "It's right there. Behind the shelf. Someone is listening to us."

"That is absolute nonsense," Julian interjected, his older voice cracking with a sudden, uncharacteristic sharpness. The elderly man in the tailored suit adjustment his collar with a trembling hand, his bewildered expression quickly hardening into a mask of deep irritation. "This house has stood for over a century. It settles, Ethan. The wood warps. You are letting your overactive imagination run wild, and you are destroying antique fixtures in the process."

"Look at the dust, Grandpa," Ethan insisted, pointing a small finger at the floorboards where fresh plaster had crumbled away in a neat, unnatural line. "It's breathing out. Feel it."

"Enough!" David grabbed the boy’s arm, pulling the mallet away with a firm, unforgiving yank.

With a sudden, violent crack that echoed through the silent mansion, a large section of the wooden wall panel gave way entirely under its own ancient weight, collapsing inward to reveal a pitch-black cavity.
