Chapter 8 - The Hand in the Dark

The iron key was violently wrenched from Julian’s grip, vanishing into the vertical shaft with a faint clink against the rungs. Julian cursed sharply, throwing his entire upper body into the opening and sweeping his tactical flashlight in a frantic arc across the subterranean landing below.

The powerful beam of light illuminated a narrow, vaulted corridor lined with damp fieldstone. Standing ten feet away at the base of the ladder, half-swallowed by the creeping shadows, was a figure draped in a tattered grey-and-white uniform identical to Grace’s. The figure’s face was obscured by a wide-brimmed hat, but one hand shot out, holding the stolen iron key aloft before slipping around a sharp corner into the darkness.

"Hey!" Julian roared, hoisting himself over the edge of the wooden threshold without a moment's hesitation. He gripped the rusted iron rungs and descended into the dark shaft with dangerous speed, his boots slamming against the rungs with loud metallic clangs.

"Julian, wait!" Grace cried out, leaning over the dark opening. She looked back over her shoulder toward the kitchen, where the three young girls were watching with wide, terrified eyes. Lily was gripping the marble counter so hard her knuckles were completely white. "Stay right here, girls! Do not move from this spot!"

Grace didn't wait for their reply. She swung her legs over the threshold, grabbed the cold iron rungs, and scrambled down the vertical ladder after Julian. The descent felt endless, the air growing colder and heavier with every foot she dropped. When her boots finally hit the damp stone floor of the subterranean corridor, the stench of mildew and old secrets was almost overpowering.

Julian was already several yards ahead, his flashlight beam slicing through the damp mist that hung low in the narrow stone tunnel. Water dripped rhythmically from the vaulted ceiling, creating loud, echoing plops that masked their footsteps.

"Julian, slow down!" Grace called out, jogging to catch up with him. "This is clearly a trap. Whoever is down here knows this layout better than we do."

"I don't care about a trap," Julian snarled, his voice echoing off the stone walls with frightening intensity. He rounded a sharp corner, his flashlight sweeping across a series of heavy wooden doors embedded into the left wall. "That person was wearing Clara's uniform. Or yours. Either way, they have answers about my wife, and I am going to get them today."

He slammed his palm against the nearest wooden door. To his surprise, it swung open effortlessly, unlocked and welcoming. The interior was pitch black. Julian swept his flashlight inside, revealing a small, windowless room that looked like an underground study.

Grace stepped up beside him, peering into the gloom. The room was furnished with a single wooden desk, an old leather armchair, and a modern laptop resting on the surface, its screen glowing with a soft, pulsing blue light.

Julian stepped inside the study, his boots crunching on something scattered across the stone floor. He lowered his flashlight to the ground.

Spread out all over the floor were dozens of printed photographs—every single one of them showing Grace walking through the house, sleeping in her room, and cooking with the children over the past six months. But right in the center of the pile was a fresh, handwritten note addressed directly to Julian.
