Chapter 2 - The Contents of the Briefcase

The sudden mention of the briefcase froze the argument instantly. Julian’s gaze snapped down to the leather case resting by his feet, a muscle ticking sharply along his jawline. The tension in the kitchen shifted from marital hostility to a cold, suffocating dread. Grace looked from Julian’s hardened face down to the heavy brass latches of the case, her mind racing through the possibilities of what secrets he had brought back into their lives after fourteen months of total isolation.
"You didn't," Grace whispered, the anger draining from her voice, replaced by a profound unease. "Tell me you didn't bring that investigation back into this house. Not around them."
Julian didn't answer immediately. He slowly knelt, his black suit jacket pulling tight across his broad shoulders, and hooked his fingers beneath the leather handle. The soft click of the brass latches opening echoed unnaturally loud in the quiet kitchen. The three young girls shrank back against the marble counter, instinctively pressing close to Grace for safety.
"You think I wanted this?" Julian said, his voice dropping to a rough murmur as he lifted the lid. "The police closed the file three months ago. They called it a missing persons cold case and moved on. But I didn't. Because I found something hidden in Clara’s private studio that the investigators missed entirely."
Grace stepped carefully around the counter, her eyes locked on the open briefcase. Inside, nestled beneath a thick layer of foam padding, lay a collection of old photographs, a bundle of handwritten letters tied with twine, and a heavy, silver-plated pocket watch that had belonged to Julian’s grandfather. But resting right on top was a single, modern flash drive made of brushed titanium.
"What is that?" Grace asked, pointing a trembling finger at the small metallic device.
"It’s an audio log," Julian said, standing up slowly and letting the briefcase lid fall shut with a dull thud. "Recorded three days before Clara disappeared. It was plugged into her laptop, hidden behind a false partition in her desk drawer. I finally managed to bypass the encryption code this morning."
"Why didn't you give it to the detectives?" Grace demanded, stepping closer, her protective instincts overriding her fear. "If there’s a recording, why are you keeping it here, in a house full of children?"
"Because the voice on this drive isn't Clara’s," Julian replied, his eyes locking onto Grace with a piercing intensity. "And it isn't mine. It belongs to someone who claims they were standing in this exact kitchen the night she vanished. Someone who knew every detail about our daily routine, down to the brand of flour we use."
Grace felt the color drain completely from her face. She looked back at the three young girls, who were watching the exchange with wide, unblinking eyes. Lily clutched a lump of unbaked dough in her small fist, her breathing shallow.
"Who?" Grace breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "Whose voice is on that drive, Julian?"
Julian reached into his suit jacket pocket, pulled out a small, black smartphone, and tossed it onto the marble counter right next to a pile of white flour. The screen lit up instantly, displaying a single audio file paused at the zero mark.

"Listen to it yourself," Julian said grimly. "It was recorded from inside the pantry."
