Chapter 12 - The Boathouse Ultimatum

The coordinates printed on the slip of paper pointed directly to the abandoned municipal boathouse located at the edge of the dark, murky lake three miles down the private estate road. Grace stared at the numbers etched in black ink, her breath catching in her throat. Twenty minutes. The margin for error was non-existent.
"You're not going alone," Julian said, his voice dropping its previous harshness, replaced by a deadly, cold determination. He stood up from the gravel, slipping the cracked silver pocket watch securely into his breast pocket. He reached behind his back, unzipping a hidden holster beneath his black suit jacket to reveal a heavy, matte-black firearm.
Grace looked at the weapon, her eyes widening. "You brought a gun into the house?"
"I brought it back from my office the day the police closed Clara's case," Julian admitted without hesitation, checking the magazine with a practiced click before sliding it back into place. "I knew someone was still lurking around the property. I just didn't expect them to target the girls."
"If we drive down there in your car, they'll see us coming a mile away," Grace argued, pointing toward the overgrown service path that wound its way through the dense pine forest toward the lake. "The old access road is completely covered by tree canopy. We have to take the maintenance ATV parked near the boiler room."
Julian nodded in immediate agreement. Without another word, he turned back into the cavernous chamber of the Victorian boiler room, where a rusted utility vehicle sat half-hidden beneath a dusty canvas tarp. Together, they ripped the cover away, revealing a battered all-terrain vehicle with a sputtering engine.
Julian hopped into the driver's seat, turning the ignition key twice before the engine coughed, sputtered, and finally roared to life with a loud, mechanical whine. Grace climbed onto the passenger side, gripping the metal safety rail tightly as Julian slammed the gear into drive. The ATV surged forward, tearing out through the open chain-link gate and plunging directly into the dense, foggy pine forest.
The ride was a brutal, bone-rattling blur of rushing trees, muddy ruts, and cold wind whipping against their faces. Grace kept her eyes fixed ahead, her mind racing through every possible scenario. The note had specified that she had to meet the kidnapper alone—yet Julian was riding right beside her with a loaded firearm. If the person waiting at the boathouse was watching through binoculars, they would spot them coming together instantly.
"Julian, listen to me," Grace shouted over the deafening roar of the ATV engine as they careened around a sharp muddy turn. "If the note said I have to go alone, we can't drive right up to the front doors. They'll see you before we even cut the motor."
"I am not letting you walk into a trap by yourself," Julian shouted back, his jaw clenched tight as he wrestled with the steering wheel. "Whoever is down at that boathouse is the same person who held Clara captive. I am ending this today."
"If you rush in with a gun, they might hurt the children before you even have a clear shot!" Grace yelled back, her voice cutting through the wind with absolute authority. "Drop me off fifty yards back in the tree line. I’ll walk the rest of the way with the note. You circle around the back through the marshland and find a vantage point on the second-story loft."
Julian slammed on the brakes, sending the ATV skidding sideways across the muddy path before coming to a violent halt against the thick trunk of an oak tree. He turned to look at Grace, his intense dark eyes searching her face for any sign of betrayal. For a long, agonizing moment, neither of them spoke.
"Don't get yourself killed, Grace," Julian finally said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper.
May you like
Grace jumped down from the vehicle without looking back, disappearing into the dense thicket of pine trees just as a sudden, piercing scream echoed through the damp morning air from the direction of the lake.
