Chapter 5 - The Phone Call from Nowhere

The sudden, piercing ring of the wall-mounted telephone shattered the tense silence of the kitchen. Everyone flinched. The three girls jumped, clustering tightly together around the marble island, while Julian whipped his head toward the vintage rotary phone mounted near the pantry archway.
The phone had been disconnected for over fourteen months. The telephone company had officially shut off the landline the week after Clara disappeared, citing unpaid bills and lack of activity in the household. Yet, the loud, mechanical bell continued to ring rhythmically, echoing off the tile walls like an alarm bell.
Julian strode across the kitchen floor in two long strides, his black suit jacket swaying. He grabbed the heavy black receiver off the hook and pressed it to his ear, his jaw clenched tight.
"Talk," Julian demanded, his voice echoing in the quiet room.
There was a heavy pause filled with a scratching, metallic hiss of static. Then, a low, distorted voice spoke through the earpiece, sounding as though it were being transmitted from underwater or through a heavily damaged intercom.
“The iron key is useless if the lock has been changed, Julian,” the voice rasped. “You’re looking for a ghost in the cellar, but the real rot is sitting right behind the marble counter in a grey-and-white uniform.”
Julian’s eyes widened. He slowly lowered the receiver from his ear and stared directly across the room at Grace. The accusation hung heavy in the air, thick and suffocating.
Grace stepped back, her hands flying up in defense. "What did they say? Julian, don't you dare listen to whoever is on the other end of that line! It’s a trick!"
"Who is this?" Julian shouted into the mouthpiece, ignoring Grace. "Give me a name!"
Instead of an answer, a soft, familiar click echoed through the line, followed immediately by the automated tone of a dead dial-tone. Julian slammed the receiver back onto the cradle. He turned around slowly, his expression shifting from suspicion to an icy, calculated fury. He walked back toward the marble counter, his gaze locked entirely on Grace.
"The caller knew about the key," Julian said, his voice dangerously quiet. "They knew about the cellar. And they knew you were standing right here in that exact uniform."
"I told you, I didn't set up any of this!" Grace yelled, her restraint finally breaking as tears of frustration pricked the corners of her eyes. "If someone is manipulating us, they are doing it from the outside! Why are you so quick to trust a disembodied voice over the person who has been taking care of your children every single day for the past six months?"
Before Julian could answer, little Lily let out a sharp gasp and pointed toward the hallway floor near the black briefcase.
Grace and Julian both spun around. Resting on the polished hardwood floor, right beside the leather briefcase that had been sitting undisturbed just minutes ago, was a freshly printed photograph.
Julian rushed over and snatched the photograph off the floor. As he looked down at the image, all the blood drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. He stared at the picture with horror, his hands beginning to shake violently.

Grace hurried over his shoulder and looked down at the image. It was a polaroid, still warm from development, showing the interior of the very kitchen they were standing in. But sitting at the marble counter, holding a cup of coffee with her back to the camera, was Clara—wearing an identical grey-and-white uniform dress, with her hair tied up in the exact same style as Grace’s.
