Chapter 7 - The Return of the Missing Wife

Julian stood frozen at the edge of the muddy clearing, the rain hammering mercilessly against his coat as he stared across the dimly lit space at his supposedly dead wife. Clara’s face was thinner than he remembered, her cheeks hollowed out by months of exhaustion and exposure, but her eyes burned with an intense, haunting clarity that cut straight through him.
"Clara?" Julian breathed, the word getting lost in the roar of the wind and rain. "How... how are you alive? The police said your car went off the cliff into the gorge."
Clara didn't smile. She lowered the blue inhaler slightly, stepping forward into the rain, leaving the towering man in the slicker holding a still-struggling Sophie.
"The police report said a lot of things, Julian," Clara said, her voice steady and chillingly calm despite the freezing downpour. "Just like the medical reports said Emily died of a sudden asthma attack. But neither of those things were true."
Julian took a slow step forward, his eyes darting between Clara and the large man holding his daughter.
"Let her go, Clara," Julian commanded, his voice dark and dangerous. "Whoever this man is, take your hands off my daughter right now."
"He isn't hurting her, Julian. He’s the only reason she’s still breathing," Clara replied sharply, gesturing for the man to set Sophie down gently onto a dry wooden crate beneath the shelter of the shed's overhang.
Sophie immediately scrambled off the crate, running blindly through the mud toward Julian with her arms outstretched, sobbing hysterically.
"Daddy! Don't let them take me back to the dark room!" Sophie cried, throwing her small arms around Julian’s waist.
Julian dropped to his knees in the mud, wrapping his arms tightly around his daughter, shielding her from the driving rain. He glared up at Clara, betrayal and fury warring within him.
"You abandoned us for six months, and now you show up in the middle of the night with a kidnapper, terrorizing my child?" Julian spat, his voice trembling with rage.
Clara stopped a few feet away, looking down at Julian with an expression of profound, crushing sorrow.

"I didn't abandon you, Julian. I was running for my life," Clara whispered, stepping closer. "And if you hadn't brought Sophie back into that house tonight, Beatrice would have finished what she started with Emily."
