Chapter 6 - Shattered Glass

Julian spun away from the desk, abandoning the manila envelope as he sprinted out of the study and back toward the brightly lit modern hallway. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs, every instinct screaming that Martha and Sophie were in immediate danger. As he rounded the corner into the grand foyer, the scene before him made his blood run cold.
The double glass doors leading to the exterior terrace were shattered inward, millions of glittering glass shards scattered across the pristine Italian marble like frozen diamonds. Freezing night air rushed into the warm mansion, carrying the scent of damp earth and pine. Martha was sprawled on the floor near the console table, clutching her bruised arm and gasping for breath, while the heavy front entrance stood wide open to the dark, stormy night.
"Martha! Where is Sophie?" Julian roared, dropping to his knees beside the terrified maid.
Martha pointed a trembling, blood-streaked finger toward the shattered doorway, her eyes wide with unadulterated panic.
"A man... he came through the glass," Martha sobbed, her words tumbling over one another. "He didn't say a word. He just grabbed her out of my arms and ran into the woods."
Julian didn't hesitate for a second. He sprang to his feet, ignoring the freezing wind cutting through his dress shirt, and lunged through the shattered double doors into the darkness.
"Julian, wait! It’s a trap!" Beatrice’s voice echoed sharply from the foyer behind him, but he drowned her out.
The rain had turned into a heavy, blinding downpour, soaking his dark coat instantly and turning the manicured lawn into a treacherous expanse of mud and wet grass. The beam of the exterior security lights cut a feeble path through the driving rain, illuminating the jagged tree line at the edge of the sprawling estate. Julian squinted through the downpour, his eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement.
A tiny, high-pitched scream cut through the roar of the wind.
"Daddy!"
The voice came from deep within the dense pine forest bordering the property, muffled by the driving rain and the thick canopy of trees. Julian surged forward, his boots slipping and sliding in the thick mud as he plunged headfirst into the dark woods. The thorny underbrush lashed at his face and tore at his coat, but he ignored the stinging pain, driven solely by the primal need to reach his daughter.
"Sophie! I'm coming!" Julian shouted into the storm, his lungs burning with the freezing air.
He pushed past a thick cluster of low-hanging pine branches, breaking into a small, secluded clearing illuminated faintly by an old, rusted utility shed. In the center of the muddy clearing stood a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark rain slicker, holding a struggling, crying Sophie under one arm while a second figure stepped out of the shadows of the shed.

Julian skidded to a halt at the edge of the clearing, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug deep into his palms. The second figure stepped into the pale beam of a flashlight resting on a wooden crate. It wasn't a stranger. It was Clara, her blonde hair soaked and matted to her pale face, holding the very blue medical inhaler in her hand.
