Chapter 10 - Beneath the Foundation

The iron drainage tunnel was pitch black, smelling intensely of stagnant water, rust, and damp earth. Julian crouched low, his shoulders scraping against the cold, jagged concrete ceiling as he carried Sophie through the ankle-deep muck. The tall man walked in front, using a heavy-duty tactical flashlight to cut through the oppressive darkness, while Clara brought up the rear, sealing the heavy iron grate behind them to shut out the sound of the storm and any pursuing rifle fire.
"Keep moving, don't look back," the stranger urged, his deep voice echoing off the damp concrete walls.
Sophie buried her face against Julian’s neck, her breathing thankfully steady now, aided by the second inhaler Clara had managed to slip into her pocket before they fled the clearing. The terrifying ordeal had left the little girl utterly exhausted, but the immediate danger of suffocation had passed.
After what felt like miles of crawling through the labyrinthine plumbing of the estate, the concrete tunnel abruptly opened up into a wide, subterranean chamber illuminated by harsh, flickering fluorescent lights. Julian stepped out of the muck, lowering Sophie gently onto a dry wooden pallet resting against the wall.
The room was vast, filled with rows of high-tech computer servers humming quietly, their tiny green indicator lights blinking in unison. Along the far wall stood a series of stainless-steel medical examination tables, surrounded by monitors displaying complex biological schematics that made Julian’s stomach churn.
"What is this place?" Julian whispered, staring in horror at the sophisticated laboratory hidden beneath his former home.
"This is where Beatrice and her associates engineered the synthetic compounds," Clara said, walking over to one of the computer terminals and tapping a series of keys. The main monitor flickered to life, displaying a live security feed of the mansion's upstairs study.
On the screen, Beatrice could be clearly seen pacing back and forth across the Persian rug, holding a silver-plated revolver in her right hand while speaking into a secure comms headset.
"She knows we're down here," the tall man said, pulling the slide of his firearm back with a sharp, metallic clack. "The entire sub-level operates on a closed-circuit network. Every time we opened a door, a silent alarm tripped."
Julian clenched his fists, turning to face his wife. "Who are you working with, Clara? Who is this man?"
The tall man slowly lowered the hood of his rain slicker, revealing a deeply weathered face with sharp, intelligent blue eyes and a scar running jaggedly across his left jawline.

"My name is Marcus Vance," the man said quietly, stepping into the harsh fluorescent light. "And I was the lead architect who designed this mansion twenty years ago—before Beatrice and her partners turned it into a biological testing facility."
