Chapter 1 - The Echo of Broken Glass

The bright, sterile lights of the modern mansion hallway buzzed with a fierce, unnatural hum. Julian stood chest-heaving in the doorway of the double glass entrance, his dark coat damp from the freezing rain outside, his trimmed beard speckled with mist. His dark eyes darted frantically across the pristine Italian marble floor, locking onto Beatrice, the blonde woman standing by the grand staircase. She held a crystal glass of red wine, her knuckles stark white against the stem, her expression a toxic mix of panic and glacial detachment. Julian didn't wait for her to acknowledge him; he surged forward, his boots echoing sharply off the high ceilings.

"Where is Sophie?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate edge that cut through the sterile quiet of the foyer.

Beatrice took a slow, deliberate sip of her wine, her eyes narrowing as she met his intense gaze.

"You have no right to barge in here like a common criminal, Julian," Beatrice whispered, her tone chillingly calm despite the tremor in her lower lip.

"Don't play games with me, Beatrice. Where is my daughter?" Julian shouted, stepping closer, his chest pressing hard against his dark vest.

From the shadows near the corridor leading to the domestic quarters, Martha stumbled into the light. The thirty-year-old maid’s white uniform was smudged with dust, her black collar torn askew. A dark bruise blossomed across her cheekbone, and a streak of dried blood caked her nose. She clutched a heavy, iron-ringed set of brass keys in her trembling hand.

"She locked her down there!" Martha cried out, pointing frantically toward the heavy metal basement door tucked beneath the grand staircase. "She can't breathe!"

Julian’s blood ran cold. He turned his glare back to Beatrice, his hand instinctively reaching out to snatch the keys from Martha's grip.

"You psychotic monster," Julian hissed, staring daggers at Beatrice. "If anything has happened to her—"

"I was protecting this family from your negligence," Beatrice interrupted coldly, finally setting her wineglass down on a marble console with a sharp clink. "You brought this chaos into our home."

Julian ignored her, sprinting toward the heavy metal door. The air around the basement threshold felt instantly heavier, smelling of damp stone and stale rust. He shoved the key into the heavy brass padlock, his hands shaking violently as he twisted the tumbler. The lock clicked open with a deafening metallic echo, and he wrenched the heavy door wide, plunging headfirst down the dark stone stairs into the abyss.
