Chapter 8 - The Power Outage

Emergency red strobe lights flickered to life along the concrete corridors, casting long, frantic shadows against the institutional walls. Maya stumbled forward in the sudden darkness, her hand trailing along the cold cinderblock wall to keep her balance as Detective Miller pushed past her, shouting orders into his handheld radio.
"All units, lock down visiting sector B! Inmate family member attempting unauthorized exit with contraband!" the detective yelled, his voice echoing off the metallic doors.
Drew grabbed Maya’s arm to steady her as they hurried down the hallway toward the visiting booths. The heavy steel door of visiting room four stood wide open, the security mechanism disabled from the inside.
Inside the booth, the room was empty. The plexiglass divider was smeared with smudged fingerprints, and the heavy canvas duffel bag was gone. On the metal shelf, a small, encrypted burner phone blinked with a single incoming text message.
Detective Miller stepped into the booth, flashing his tactical flashlight across the floor. He picked up the burner phone with a gloved hand and read the glowing screen aloud.
"Thanks for keeping my husband warm, detective. But the real game hasn't even started yet."
Maya stepped into the room, her eyes scanning the empty space where Sarah had vanished into thin air. "How did she get out? The entire facility was locked down the second the alarm sounded."
"She didn't use the doors," Detective Miller said, shining his light up toward the ceiling. The heavy metal utility hatch, normally bolted shut with industrial-grade screws, hung open, swinging gently on a single hinge. "She had inside help. Someone on the prison staff bypassed the security grid."
Drew shook his head, running a hand through his hair in absolute disbelief. "Inside help? Who in this facility would risk their career to help Sarah escape?"
Before the detective could answer, his radio hissed to life with an emergency bulletin from dispatch.
"Detective Miller, we have an urgent report from the parking structure," the dispatcher's voice crackled over the static, distorted by interference. "A prison transport van was just hijacked at gunpoint by an unidentified female matching Sarah Carson’s description. She’s heading northbound on Interstate 95."
Maya stared at the open utility hatch, a cold realization settling deep in her stomach. "She didn't just plan this escape today, Drew. She’s been building alliances inside this system for months. And Mom wasn't the mastermind—she was just another pawn in Sarah’s grand design."

Detective Miller cursed, turning sharply toward the exit. "Come on. We're cutting her off at the county line before she crosses the state border."
