Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail

The kitchen table was buried under a chaotic mess of bank statements, tax returns, and canceled checks. Maya sat across from Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with tired eyes, while her younger brother, Drew, stood leaning against the refrigerator, watching the proceedings with a growing sense of dread. Drew’s green sweater matched Maya’s, a lingering coincidence from a morning that had irrevocably altered their lives. The house was quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the scratching of the detective's pen.

Detective Miller flipped through a highlighted page, his brow furrowing as he traced a line with his thumb.

"This is the original account?" Detective Miller asked, looking up from the documents to address Helen, who sat rigidly in the corner. "Your son was the custodian?"

Helen nodded stiffly, refusing to meet anyone's gaze.

Drew pushed off the counter and stepped closer to the table, his eyes wide and shocked as he stared down at the account numbers and routing details printed on the official statement. He reached out, his fingers trembling slightly as he touched the thick paper.

"Wait a minute," Drew said, his voice dropping an octave as confusion gave way to a chilling realization. He traced a name printed at the bottom of the beneficiary line. "And Drew was the beneficiary?"

Maya looked over at her brother, her expression hardening further. "Not just a beneficiary, Drew. Look at the date of the transfer. It happened three days after Grandma passed away. While we were planning the funeral."

Drew snatched the paper closer, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he processed the numbers. "I never asked for this money. I didn't even know this account still existed after I turned eighteen. Mom, what did you do?"

Helen finally broke her silence, her voice tight and defensive. "I managed the accounts the way I saw fit. It was family money. It stays in the family."

"It wasn't your money to move," Detective Miller interjected, his tone flat and professional. "Moving funds from a restricted educational trust without the primary beneficiary’s consent, and forging signatures to do so, crosses the line from a family dispute into serious financial fraud. Mr. and Mrs. Carson are going to have a lot of questions to answer."

Drew shook his head, backing away from the table as if the documents were on fire. "Tyler’s house. He lives in a half-million-dollar home across town. Did he know where this came from?"

Maya looked up slowly, a dark realization dawning in her eyes. "He didn't just know, Drew. He signed the secondary mortgage papers using this exact routing number."
