Chapter 10 - The Highway Confession

The freezing night wind whipped across the asphalt as Maya stood frozen, her hand resting on the crumpled hood of the police cruiser. The red and blue emergency lights flashed erratically, casting long, dancing shadows against the towering concrete barriers of the interstate. Detective Miller kept his service weapon leveled squarely at Sarah’s chest, his stance rigid and uncompromising.

"Drop the detonator right now, Sarah! That's your final warning!" Detective Miller's voice boomed over the wind.

Sarah did not lower her hand. Instead, she thumbed the small toggle switch on the black plastic device, causing a small green LED light to blink rhythmically.

"Go ahead and shoot, Detective," Sarah challenged, her voice shockingly steady. "If you pull that trigger, the frequency transmits to a remote server. The entire digital record of every hidden account, every forged signature, and every dirty secret Helen buried will be automatically broadcast to every federal prosecutor and major news outlet in the country."

Maya stepped past the detective, ignoring his warning arm. "What are you talking about? What secret about my father?"

Sarah’s gaze softened for a brief, deceptive second before hardening back into an expression of calculated malice.

"Your father didn't die in a car accident, Maya," Sarah said clearly, every word cutting through the roaring traffic like a knife. "Helen didn't just embezzle money from dead relatives. She engineered his disappearance twenty years ago because he found out about her first embezzlement scheme."

Drew stumbled out of the car, slamming the door behind him as the revelation hit him like a physical blow. "That's a lie. Mom said he drove off a bridge during a snowstorm!"

"There was no snowstorm that night, Drew," Sarah replied, stepping backward toward the edge of the overpass where a sleek black getaway car idled with its headlights off. "Check the county coroner's files from October twentieth. The body pulled from that river wasn't your father. It was an unidentified transient wearing his wedding ring."

Detective Miller lowered his weapon just an inch, his tactical training warring with the sheer shock of the accusation. "If that's true..."

"It is true," Sarah interrupted, lifting the detonator higher. "And Helen kept him locked away in a private psychiatric facility upstate for over a decade, funded entirely by the stolen trusts she looted from your family."

Before the detective could close the distance between them, Sarah dropped a smoke grenade onto the pavement. A thick, blinding cloud of white vapor exploded instantly, enveloping the entire section of the highway in an impenetrable fog.

Maya coughed, waving her hands in front of her face as she strained to see through the smoke. "Sarah! Don't let her get away!"

When the smoke finally dissipated a few agonizing seconds later, the highway was completely empty. The transport van's doors stood wide open, and the black getaway car was nothing more than distant tail lights vanishing into the dark horizon.

Detective Miller lowered his gun completely, his expression grim. "Get back in the car. We're going to the state archives."
