Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise

The afternoon sun cut harshly through the dusty living room window, illuminating the swirling dust motes in a space that once felt safe. Maya stood rigid near the entryway, the harsh light catching the dark strands of hair falling across her face. Her knuckles were white as she clutched a smartphone in one hand and a thick sheaf of financial paperwork in the other. Across the room, her mother, Helen, stood with her hands casually tucked into the pockets of her beige cardigan over a crisp white top, maintaining an unnerving, icy composure that made Maya’s chest tighten with fury.

"Where’s my college money?" Maya demanded, her voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief.

Helen did not flinch. She shifted her weight slightly, her short brown hair framing a face entirely devoid of remorse.

"We used it for Tyler’s house," Helen replied smoothly, her tone as placid as if she were discussing the weather. "He needed it more than you do."

Maya stared at her, the words hanging heavily in the quiet air like a physical blow.

"You used my tuition? The money Grandma left specifically for my education? Without a single word to me?" Maya stepped forward, her green sweater trembling with suppressed rage. "Tyler is a grown man. He has a career. I am three months away from my final semester, and you just handed my future over to him?"

"Tyler was starting a family," Helen answered, her voice hardening just a fraction. "He had responsibilities. You were just going to school. You’ll figure something out, Maya. You always do."

"Figure it out?" Maya thrust the papers toward her mother, the pages rustling sharply. "Look at this! This isn't just a loan, Helen. This is identity theft. You forged my signature on the withdrawal slips."

Helen’s gaze dropped to the documents for a fraction of a second before meeting Maya’s eyes again. A cold smile touched the corners of her mouth.

"I am your mother," Helen said quietly. "I did what I had to do for this family."

May you like

"No," Maya whispered, tears stinging the backs of her eyes as she pulled out her phone and hit redial. "You destroyed this family. And now, you're going to explain this to the police."
