Chapter 7

The tension on Oakridge Lane reached a boiling point as the reality of Arthur’s words settled over Director Vance. The corporate manager’s confident posture slumped just a fraction, the veneer of immunity peeling away to reveal a cornered operator calculating his exit strategy. Vance glanced back toward the white utility van, where the driver was staring anxiously through the windshield, weighing the wisdom of staying put versus hitting the gas and abandoning the crew.

The police officer saw the driver’s movement and immediately drew his weapon, pointing it downward at a safe angle while projecting absolute authority. “Kill the engine and put your hands on the steering wheel where I can see them!” he shouted, his voice cutting through the damp afternoon air.

Inside the van, the driver hesitated for a heartbeat before slowly raising both hands against the glass and cutting the diesel motor. The sudden silence that followed underscored the finality of their entrapment.

The enforcer with the steel chain looked between the immobilized van and Vance, realizing he was being left out to dry. With a low grunt of frustration, he let the chain drop clattering onto the wet asphalt, raising his empty hands in surrender. He wasn’t about to catch felony charges for a corporate boss who viewed him as nothing more disposable labor.

The inspector stepped forward, holding up his briefcase like a badge of office. “Vance, you’re under arrest for wire fraud, extortion, and impersonating a federal regulatory official. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Vance stood motionless for a moment, his jaw working as he weighed his options. For a second, it looked as though he might bolt down the driveway of the adjacent house, but the police officer closed the distance instantly, his boots splashing through a puddle as he stepped into Vance’s path with plastic zip-cuffs ready in his hand.

“Don't do it,” the officer warned softly. “It only gets worse from here.”

With a slow, rigid motion, Vance raised his hands, his face tight with suppressed fury as the cuffs were locked securely around his wrists. The swiftness of the apprehension stunned the neighborhood; for months, these men had operated with absolute impunity, believing their bureaucratic loopholes were impenetrable.

Mrs. Gable exhaled a long, shaky breath, her frail shoulders relaxing for the first time in weeks. She lowered her walker slightly and looked at Arthur with deep, unspoken gratitude in her tired eyes. “Thank you, son,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the cooling diesel engine.

Arthur gave her a respectful nod, then walked over to his fallen motorcycle. With a careful, practiced grip, he righted the heavy machine, checking the handlebars and levers. Aside from a few fresh scratches on the chrome and a cracked turn signal, the classic bike was intact. He kicked the kickstand down, ensuring it rested securely on the dry strip of concrete near the curb.
