Chapter 12

The miles melted beneath Arthur’s tires as he cruised through the rolling countryside beyond the suburban fringe. The open highway offered a welcome contrast to the tight corners and high-tension standoffs of Oakridge Lane. Yet, despite the physical distance, his mind frequently drifted back to the events that had unfolded on that wet pavement weeks ago.

He realized that the battle against exploitation was never truly finished; it simply shifted from one neighborhood to another, waiting for someone willing to stand in the gap. Vance and his crew were behind bars, but the systemic vulnerabilities that allowed such predators to thrive in the wake of natural disasters still required eternal vigilance.

Arthur pulled his motorcycle off at a scenic overlook perched high above the river valley. He cut the engine, the sudden quiet wrapping around him like a warm blanket. He pulled off his helmet and set it on the seat, walking over to the wooden observation rail to take in the vast, panoramic view of the landscape below.

A younger traveler on a touring bike pulled up beside him a moment later, cutting his engine and stepping off with a tired groan, stretching his arms toward the sky. The rider looked at Arthur’s classic machine, then at Arthur’s weathered leather vest and steady, calm demeanor.

“Long ride?” the younger man asked, wiping dust from his visor.

“Long enough,” Arthur replied with a faint smile. “Just checking the route ahead.”

“Any trouble on the roads further north?” the rider asked, sensing a quiet wisdom in the older man’s presence.

“Not if you keep your eyes open and pay attention to who’s really running the tolls,” Arthur answered cryptically.

The younger rider nodded slowly, not fully understanding the depth of the warning, but appreciating the sentiment nonetheless. They stood side by side in silence for a few minutes, two travelers sharing a quiet moment on the edge of the world before the road called them back.
