Chapter 7: The Conditions of Dirt

Eleanor did not embrace him. She did not weep.

She walked down the wooden steps, holding an iron ring with a single brass key.

""The guest bedroom in the main house is occupied by two young apprentices from the agricultural college,"" Eleanor said evenly. ""You will sleep in the old shearer's cabin behind the barn. There is a woodstove, a cot, and an axe. If you want heat, you will cut your own hardwood.""

Julian swallowed hard, looking toward the small, weathered timber cabin on the edge of the north pasture. ""Mother... the bankruptcy trustees took everything. My car, my apartment in Tribeca, the accounts. Victoria's family is suing me for fraud.""

""Your debts in New York are the consequences of your choices, Julian,"" Eleanor said, looking directly into his eyes. ""I will not give you one dollar to pay off lawyers who helped you try to steal this earth from your neighbors.""

She tossed the brass key into the dirt at his feet.

""Breakfast is at five-thirty in the morning. If you are thirty seconds late, the table is cleared. If you want to eat, you will work the grain sorting lines with Donald and the boys.""

Julian stared at the key in the mud. For thirty-two years, his mother had cushioned every fall, smoothed every mistake, and shielded him from the harsh realities of the world.

He knelt in the dirt, picked up the cold brass key, and gripped it in his trembling palm.

""I'll be there at five-thirty, Mother,"" Julian choked out.

""We shall see,"" Eleanor replied, turning back toward the sound of the grinding stones.
