Chapter 5: The Collapse of the Gala

In Greenwich, the morning sun brought no celebration, only the brutal chill of financial reality.
Inside the luxury hotel suite, Victoria was screaming at her father’s lead corporate attorney over speakerphone. The floor was littered with torn wedding wrapping paper, unopened gifts, and half-empty bottles of champagne.
Julian sat on the edge of the unmade bed with his head in his hands, still wearing his rumpled tuxedo trousers and an undershirt. His phone was buzzing continuously with margin-call notifications from his brokerage accounts.
""What do you mean the deed is non-transferable?"" Victoria yelled into the phone. ""Julian signed the inheritance waiver!""
*""Victoria, listen to me,""* the attorney’s voice replied from the speaker, sounding exhausted and clipped. *""Julian never inherited the land. Arthur Vance structured the entire estate so that ownership transferred entirely to a community board of trustees upon his death, with Eleanor holding sole lifetime power of allocation. Julian was only ever an alternate beneficiary on the timber revenues—revenues that Eleanor diverted into the regional vocational school three years ago.""*
Victoria slowly lowered the phone, turning her furious gaze upon her new husband.
""You idiot,"" Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with venomous rage. ""You lied to me. You told me you owned that four hundred acres outright.""
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his face hollow. ""I... I thought she would fold, Victoria. She always protected me. Whenever I failed in business, she bailed me out.""
May you like
""She didn't fold,"" Victoria snarled, slipping off her diamond engagement ring and throwing it at his chest. ""She let you walk into this room, take my family's money for the wedding, and humiliate us in front of every investor in New England. You are broke, Julian. And our marriage is over before the marriage certificate is even filed.""
