Chapter 13: The Unshakeable Ground

Julian looked at Victoria for a long, quiet moment.
In her eyes, he saw no genuine warmth, no understanding of the labor surrounding them, and no appreciation for the human souls who made this valley thrive. He saw only the endless, hollow hunger of a machine that consumed lives for balance sheets.
Julian smiled—a quiet, peaceful smile that held no anger, no bitterness, and no regret.
""Thank you for the offer, Victoria,"" Julian said gently. ""But I already have a full-time position.""
Victoria frowned in disbelief. ""Doing what? Hauling grain sacks for fourteen dollars an hour?""
Julian looked around the sunlit farmyard—at the children laughing by the cider press, at Clara explaining timber framing to a young apprentice, and at his mother sitting on the porch swing, smiling in the warm afternoon light.
""I’m learning how to build things that don't collapse when the wind blows,"" Julian answered calmly. ""I hope you find peace, Victoria. But my work is here.""
He turned his back on her, lifted another sack of flour onto his shoulder, and walked into the mill.
Victoria stood alone in the dust of the driveway, the bluegrass music swirling around her, realizing with absolute finality that there was nothing in her world wealthy enough to buy the man he had become.
