Chapter 3 - The Crimson Alarm

The sudden crimson flash painted the interior of the private elevator in an eerie, pulsing glow. Polina buried her face against the lapel of Diego’s sharp black suit, her small shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. Diego wrapped a protective arm around her, his mind racing as he stared at the disabled control panel. The elevator wasn't responding to his biometric scan. Someone had overridden the primary mainframe from the secondary terminal in the basement archives.
"Marcus!" Diego shouted, turning back toward the foyer.
Marcus was already jogging across the marble floor, his tablet glowing brightly in his hands. He tapped the screen frantically, his face draining of what little color it had left.
"Sir, we’ve been locked out of the main grid," Marcus said, breathing heavily as he reached the base of the stairs. "Someone has initiated a total system purge. All security footage from the past five years is being wiped as we speak."
"Who has the master override codes?" Diego demanded, shifting Polina to a more secure hold.
"Only you, Mr. Sterling... and Elena," Marcus replied grimly.
Diego’s jaw tightened. Elena was not just a calculating socialite; she was dismantling the very infrastructure of his corporate empire to cover her tracks. If those archives were destroyed, the truth about Polina's lineage, the missing trust funds, and the suspicious circumstances surrounding his brother’s death would vanish forever into the digital ether.
"Get the physical keys from the vault," Diego instructed sharply. "We’re taking the manual service stairs."
They moved quickly through the darkened corridors behind the grand staircase, leaving the opulent foyer behind. The service stairs were narrow, winding downward into the cool, concrete underbelly of the mansion. The air smelled of old paper, dust, and ozone. Every footstep echoed hollowly against the reinforced walls.
Polina clutched her patterned handbag, her large eyes staring into the shadows. "Daddy, is the bad lady going to hurt us?"
"Never," Diego promised, his voice fierce and unyielding. "Nobody is going to hurt you while I'm breathing."
They reached the heavy steel fire door that led to the basement archives. To Diego's surprise, the door was already slightly ajar. A thin strip of white fluorescent light spilled out onto the concrete floor. Diego motioned for Marcus to stay back, gently setting Polina down behind a reinforced pillar.
"Stay right here, sweetheart. Don't move an inch," Diego whispered.
He drew a small silver key from his vest pocket—a key he kept hidden for absolute emergencies—and inserted it into the secondary latch of the archive door. With a slow, silent push, the heavy door swung inward.
Inside the vast room filled with floor-to-ceiling filing cabinets, a figure stood before the main terminal. It wasn't Elena. It was Julian, Diego’s trusted chief legal counsel, hastily downloading encrypted files onto a portable flash drive.
Diego stepped into the room, his voice cutting through the hum of the cooling servers like a razor.
