Chapter 10 - The Federal Arrival

The wailing sirens echoed off the stone walls of the Sterling estate courtyard, growing louder until the flashing red and blue lights of federal intervention vehicles cast dramatic shadows through the loading dock windows. Heavy boots thudded down the concrete stairs, and within seconds, a squad of armed federal marshals poured into the bay, led by a tall, sharp-featured woman in a crisp black FBI windbreaker.
"Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Financial Crimes," the woman announced, flashing her badge before sweeping her gaze across the room. She spotted Arthur lying on the floor with a broken wrist and the tactical guards restrained against the wooden pallets. She then looked at Diego, who stood tall holding Polina in his arms.
"Mr. Sterling, I presume?" Agent Vance asked, lowering her badge.
"You took your time, Agent," Diego replied evenly, adjusting his hold on the little girl.
"We had to wait for the systemic firewall override to clear," Agent Vance explained, gesturing for two junior officers to secure Arthur Vance and slap heavy steel handcuffs on him. "Your chief legal counsel, Julian, tried to flee through the east gates ten minutes ago with a flash drive full of incriminating data. We intercepted him at the perimeter."
Arthur Vance was hoisted roughly to his feet by the marshals, his face twisted in bitter defeat as he glared at Diego one last time. "You haven't won everything, Sterling. The foundation still holds the land grants. You can't touch them without a full congressional audit."
"Let the audit begin," Diego retorted coldly as Arthur was dragged away toward the elevators.
Agent Vance stepped closer, her eyes softening slightly as she looked at Polina, who was quietly resting her head against Diego’s shoulder, clutching her patterned handbag.
"Is this the child?" Agent Vance asked quietly.
"Yes," Diego said, his voice carrying a protective edge. "And she is staying with me, under full diplomatic and familial protection."
"That will require a formal custody hearing, Mr. Sterling, especially given the complicated corporate entanglements surrounding her arrival," Agent Vance warned professionally, though her tone was sympathetic. "Child services will need to conduct a standard evaluation tomorrow morning."
Diego nodded once. "I welcome it. Everything she needs is under this roof."
"Very well. We'll leave a perimeter detail for the night. The estate is officially a federal crime scene investigation zone, but you and the child are free to move within the residence," Agent Vance said, turning to coordinate her departing team.
Diego turned back toward the private elevator, carrying Polina up and out of the cold basement. Marcus followed closely behind, nursing his wounded head with a fresh bandage.
As they stepped back into the grand foyer, the stark white marble staircase looked entirely different than it had hours ago—no longer a battlefield of betrayal, but the threshold of a new beginning. Diego carried Polina up the sweeping steps, walking down the long, dimly lit hallway toward the master residential wing.
He pushed open the heavy oak doors of the grand nursery—a room that had remained locked and untouched for two decades, preserved in pristine dust and memory.
Diego set Polina down gently on the edge of the velvet-upholstered white bed. The little girl looked around the enormous room with wide, wondrous eyes, her light pink ruffled dress catching the moonlight.
"Is this my room, Daddy?" Polina whispered softly.
"It is," Diego smiled gently, sitting down beside her and brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "And you are never leaving."
Polina smiled back, a genuine, radiant smile that melted away the last remnants of Diego’s cold exterior. She reached into her patterned handbag and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper she hadn't shown him yet, handing it over with a shy glance.
Diego unfolded it slowly. It was a drawing of a family—a tall man in a black suit, a little girl in a pink dress, and a third figure scribbled out in heavy black marker.

Diego froze. The scribbled-out figure had the faint outline of a woman wearing crystal earrings.
