Chapter 2 - The Secret Cipher

The ink on the crumpled piece of paper seemed to burn against Diego’s fingertips. He stared at the looping, unfamiliar handwriting while the grand foyer fell into an oppressive, suffocating silence. Polina remained frozen by the marble pillar, her small frame trembling inside her light pink ruffled dress. She clutched her patterned handbag as if it were the only anchor keeping her tethered to reality.
Diego dropped to one knee once more, ignoring the crushing weight in his chest. He extended a hand toward the little girl, his fingers trembling ever so slightly.
"Polina, look at me," Diego said, his tone softening into a gentle plea. "Where did you get this button?"
The child blinked away fresh tears, her lower lip quivering. She slowly opened her small handbag and pulled out a tarnished silver locket, holding it out on her open palm.
"Mommy told me to give it to the man in the black suit if the big white house ever got too loud," Polina whispered, her voice barely audible over the ticking of the antique grandfather clock near the parlor entrance.
Diego took the locket. It was an antique piece bearing the Sterling family crest—a crest that had supposedly been lost in a devastating fire twenty years ago, the very fire that had supposedly consumed his first wife and infant daughter. The implications hit him like a physical blow. Elena had known about this. She had known all along, yet she had engineered a life of calculated luxury built upon a foundation of absolute deception.
Footsteps echoed from the corridor behind the staircase, and Marcus, the aging head of security, stepped into the light. His face was pale, carrying the grim expression of a man who had spent decades burying family secrets.
"Mr. Sterling, you shouldn't have opened that note," Marcus said quietly, keeping his distance.
"How long, Marcus?" Diego demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made the older man flinch. "How long did Elena keep her here without my knowledge?"
Marcus swallowed hard, avoiding Diego’s piercing gaze. He looked down at the little girl before speaking in a hushed confession.
"She arrived three days ago, sir. Sent by a courier who claimed to be acting on behalf of your late brother’s estate. But that’s not all. There’s someone waiting in the security office right now who says they have proof Elena didn't just hide the child—she tried to sell her off to international brokers."
Diego stood up abruptly, the gold button clenched tightly in his fist. He scooped Polina up into his arms, ignoring the way her delicate pearl necklace pressed against his chest.
"Lock down the estate," Diego ordered, his eyes flashing with a predatory determination. "Nobody leaves. Especially Elena."

He strode toward the private elevator, carrying the child who threatened to upend his entire empire. But as the heavy steel doors slid open, revealing the dimly lit interior, a red security light began to flash frantically above the control panel.
