Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The grand foyer of the Sterling estate echoed with a sharp, chilling resonance as Elena’s voice pierced the heavy morning air. She stood atop the sweeping white marble staircase, her white sleeveless draped dress catching the cold sunlight filtering through the arched stained-glass windows. Her crystal earrings caught the light, sparkling with a fierce intensity that matched her narrowed eyes.
"Get out of this house right now!" Elena commanded, pointing a slender, manicured finger toward the massive mahogany front doors.
Diego descended the stairs slowly, his sharp black suit impeccably tailored, his dark hair neatly styled. Yet, his expression was a battlefield of intense emotion and restrained fury. He ignored her outburst, his gaze dropping to the floor where a small gold-colored button lay gleaming near the bottom step. He stopped, crouched down, and gently lifted the metal piece between his thumb and forefinger.
A few feet away stood Polina, a young girl in a light pink ruffled dress adorned with a delicate pearl necklace. She clutched a small patterned handbag tightly against her chest, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks. Her lower lip trembled, but she made no sound.
Diego looked at the button, then up at the child. His voice broke the tense silence, coming out as a soft, fractured whisper.
"Polina."
The little girl looked down tearfully with large, frightened eyes. She clutched her handbag even tighter, her knuckles turning white.
"Daddy," she whimpered softly.
Diego’s face filled with a sudden, devastating wave of realization. Tears welled up in his dark eyes, blurring the luxurious surroundings. He stared at her, the impossible truth crashing down on his defenses.
"Who's your mother?" Diego choked out, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and long-buried grief.
Before the child could answer, Elena rushed down the remaining steps. She stepped forward angrily, her face twisted in a furious expression. She grabbed Diego’s arm, her fingernails digging through the expensive fabric of his suit.
"Diego, are you choosing them over me?" Elena shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Diego pulled his arm free with a slow, deliberate motion. He stood up to his full height, looking down at her with absolute coldness.
"She's not leaving. Ever," Diego said firmly.

Elena stared at him in utter disbelief, her chest heaving. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a folded piece of paper, and tossed it into his face before storming toward the back exit. Diego opened the paper, and his blood ran completely cold as he read the handwritten note.
