Chapter 7

The lobby air grew thick with a suffocating tension as Vance’s hand lingered inside his suit jacket. David unclipped the safety strap on his holster, his eyes fixed on the man’s knuckles. In a luxury hotel accustomed to quiet luxury and polite greetings, the threat of real violence felt surreal, yet the bruising on Maya’s face was a brutal reminder that the danger was entirely authentic. Eleanor shrank back further, pressing her velvet-clad back against a marble pillar, realizing too late that she had invited forces into her life far beyond her ability to control or dismiss.

“You think a badge and a trust fund make you untouchable?” Vance asked softly, taking a slow step toward Maya. His voice carried an eerie calm that was far more terrifying than a shout. “People vanish in this city every single day, little girl. Accidents happen. Elevators malfunction. People slip on wet marble.”

Before Vance could clear his jacket, the heavy glass doors slid open once more. This time, however, it wasn’t a pair of shadowy enforcers stepping inside. A squad of four uniformed city police officers, led by a middle-aged detective with a tired expression and a windbreaker over his suit, poured into the lobby. Their hands were steady, their posture tactical, and their eyes took in the entire scene in a single sweeping glance.

Detective Miller stopped ten paces away, resting his hand casually near his service weapon while his junior officers fanned out to secure the perimeter, cutting off any route toward the exits.

“Grand Azure Hotel, midnight security check,” Detective Miller announced, his gravelly voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “We received an anonymous tip regarding an active assault and corporate extortion taking place on the ground floor. Nobody move.”

Vance’s hand froze inside his jacket. He slowly withdrew his empty fingers, smoothing the lapel of his suit with practiced casualness, though his eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he assessed the cops. Eleanor gasped, her face draining of all color. She rushed forward toward the detective, her diamond earrings swaying frantically.

“Detective, thank goodness!” Eleanor cried out, instantly pivoting back to her aristocratic persona, though her panic leaked through every pore. “This delinquent broke into the lobby, assaulted me, and is currently attempting to extort the hotel management with forged documents. Arrest her immediately!”

Detective Miller glanced at Eleanor, then looked past her to Maya, who stood calmly by the reception desk. The detective’s gaze lingered on the fresh bruises on Maya’s face, the torn tank top, and finally, the gold insignia dangling from her bag. He pulled a small digital tablet from his pocket, swiped through a secure file, and compared the image on the screen with the young woman standing before him.

“Ms. Maya Lin-Sterling, I presume?” Detective Miller asked, ignoring Eleanor entirely.

“Yes, Detective,” Maya replied, her voice steady. “I am pressing formal charges of assault, kidnapping, and corporate embezzlement against both Eleanor Sterling and her associates.”

Eleanor staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. “You can’t be serious! She’s a liar!”
