Chapter 6

The cool night air swept across the polished marble lobby, carrying the faint scent of exhaust fumes and city rain. Two men in dark, tailored suits stepped through the sliding glass doors, their movements synchronized and purposeful. They did not look like standard hotel guests; their broad shoulders, cautious gait, and scanning eyes marked them instantly as professional operatives. Eleanor’s head snapped toward the entrance, and for a fleeting second, a look of profound relief crossed her face. But as she caught sight of the lead man’s expression—cold, calculating, and entirely devoid of warmth—that relief curdled instantly into sheer terror.

Maya noticed the shift in Eleanor’s demeanor immediately. She pushed herself away from the reception desk, her hand dropping instinctively to the strap of her messenger bag. David, sensing the immediate escalation in danger, stepped deliberately between the two newcomers and Maya, his hand resting on the taser holster at his hip.

“Closed for the evening, gentlemen,” David said, his voice dropping into a professional, authoritative register that masked his underlying tension. “Management requests that you use the side entrance for deliveries.”

The lead man, a tall individual with sharp features and a slicked-back silver haircut, ignored David entirely. His dark eyes bypassed the security guard and locked directly onto Eleanor Sterling. He walked with a slow, heavy tread, his leather shoes clicking against the floor until he stopped just a few feet away from where Eleanor stood in her shimmering red gown.

“You have a messy way of handling your domestic disputes, Eleanor,” the man said, his voice smooth, low, and utterly chilling. “Our associates downstairs reported a commotion. We expected the problem to be solved quietly in the alley, not broadcasted across the main lobby floor.”

Eleanor swallowed hard, her voice losing its previous aristocratic arrogance. She took a half-step back, her hands trembling noticeably at her sides. “Vance... this isn’t what it looks like. The situation is under control. She just... she caught us off guard.”

Vance did not look at Eleanor when she spoke; his gaze slowly shifted from her face down to the young woman standing near the reception desk. He studied Maya’s bruised cheek, the torn grey tank top, and finally, the solid gold hotel logo crest hanging from her bag. A slow, knowing smile touched the corners of his thin lips.

“So,” Vance murmured, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. “The prodigal granddaughter has finally decided to check back in. We were beginning to wonder if you’d ever crawl back out of that hole we dropped you into.”

Maya felt a cold surge of adrenaline flood her veins. The alley mugging wasn't a random act of street violence orchestrated by jealous relatives; it was a targeted assassination attempt coordinated by the very criminal syndicate Eleanor had partnered with to keep the hotel solvent.

“You picked the wrong alley,” Maya said, her voice steady and clear as glass. “And you picked the wrong owner to underestimate.”

Vance’s smile vanished. He slowly reached inside his tailored suit jacket, his fingers curling around something hidden within the dark fabric.
