Chapter 4

The vast lobby of the Grand Azure seemed to shrink as the tension between the two women reached a boiling point. Eleanor clutched the crumpled legal documents to her chest as if they were a shield against an oncoming storm. Her arrogant posture had dissolved into a rigid, defensive stiffness, her chest rising and falling beneath the dark red velvet gown in quick, shallow breaths. She stared at Maya with a mixture of loathing and mounting dread, realizing that her multi-year scheme to completely disinherit the rightful heir had unraveled in a matter of seconds on the very marble floor she believed she owned.

“You always were a stubborn little parasite,” Eleanor spat out, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. “Just like your father. He thought he could build an empire on sentimentality and honor, and look where it got him. Buried in a quiet cemetery, forgotten by the world, while I built this sanctuary from the ashes of his failure.”

Maya stopped walking. She did not turn around immediately. The mention of her father—a gentle, brilliant man who had trusted his second wife implicitly until the final, tragic days of his life—sent a sharp pang through her chest. But Maya did not cry. The tears had dried up months ago during her grueling recovery in a remote coastal town, replaced by a cold, unyielding resolve. She turned her head slowly, her bruised cheek catching the amber light of the wall sconces.

“My father didn’t fail, Eleanor. He was betrayed,” Maya said, her voice quiet but carrying an unmistakable weight that silenced the ambient noise of the lobby. “And you didn’t build this sanctuary. You occupied it. But every single brick, every crystal in these chandeliers, and every square inch of this marble floor was purchased with the hard work of people you have spent years exploiting and silencing.”

David cleared his throat nervously, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. He glanced toward the grand mahogany reception desk across the lobby, where the night manager was peeking out from behind a computer monitor, wide-eyed and terrified by the unfolding scene. David knew he had to act to maintain whatever shred of professional decorum remained.

“Ms. Sterling,” David began, addressing Maya with an instinctive, respectful tilt of his head. “Shall I escort Ms. Eleanor to the executive suites to gather her personal belongings, or would you prefer to handle this through corporate counsel in the morning?”

Eleanor whipped her head around to glare at David, her eyes flashing with pure venom. “You dare speak to me in that tone, you incompetent rent-a-cop? I pay your salary! I hired you!”

“Actually,” Maya interrupted, stepping closer to the reception desk and sliding her gold passkey into the master slot integrated into the mahogany wood, “the hotel pays his salary. And as of sixty seconds ago, I have frozen all operational accounts associated with your administrative clearance.”

A soft chime echoed from the reception console, followed by a steady red light blinking across the main terminal screen. Eleanor gasped as she realized the true scope of the maneuver. Her corporate credit cards, her access codes, her control over the hotel’s internal communications network—all of it had been severed instantly.
