Chapter 5 - The Emergency Board Summons

The master terminal screen flashed a brilliant blue before displaying the encrypted root directory of The Grand Sterling corporate network. Lines of code and financial ledgers scrolled downward at a dizzying speed. Sarah's bruised fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard with practiced ease, her focus absolute. She bypassed the standard corporate firewalls using a master cryptographic key that only the primary bloodline descendants possessed—a backdoor her grandfather had coded into the system architecture decades ago as an ultimate failsafe against hostile takeovers.

Eleanor lunged forward, her diamond earrings catching the light as she moved with surprising speed for a woman of her age. She grabbed the edge of the mahogany desk, her manicured nails digging into the wood.

"Stop right now, Sarah!" Eleanor hissed, leaning across the desk with a desperate, menacing intensity. "If you broadcast those files to the board room terminal, you aren't just destroying me. You are destroying the livelihood of twelve thousand hotel employees worldwide. Is your petty revenge worth ruining innocent people who have nothing to do with our family feud?"

Sarah paused, her fingers hovering over the enter key. She looked up at Eleanor, her green eyes narrowing as she measured the older woman's bluff.

"Don't try to play the humanitarian card with me, Eleanor," Sarah said, her voice dangerously calm. "You didn't care about the employees when you cut the pension funds last year to pad your own performance bonuses. You didn't care about anyone when you had your private security detail intercept me in the parking garage this morning and beat me against a concrete pillar."

"I was protecting the integrity of this institution," Eleanor retorted, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You are reckless. You disappear for five years, living in artist communes and cheap motels, and then you just waltz back in here expecting to inherit a multi-billion-dollar empire without paying your dues?"

"I earned my dues the day I was born into this family," Sarah said firmly. "And I paid for my absence with the scars on my face. Now watch."

Without hesitation, Sarah struck the enter key.

Across the entire forty-story building, every executive office terminal, conference room display screen, and the main digital marquee in the lobby simultaneously froze. The standard corporate screensavers vanished, replaced by a bold, uneditable notification banner that broadcasted across every internal display: EMERGENCY EXECUTIVE BOARD SUMMONS. PENTHOUSE SUITE. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE.

Beneath the summons, a single encrypted PDF attachment titled Forensic Audit: Fiscal Years 2019-2024 began downloading automatically onto every board member's private tablet.

Eleanor watched the terminal screen in helpless horror, her knees buckling slightly as she gripped the desk for support. The notification sound chimed softly from dozens of offices down the hallway, echoing like distant tolling bells.

"You've just declared open war," Eleanor whispered, her voice devoid of its previous arrogance, replaced by a cold, calculated survival instinct. "You think you're the hunter in this scenario, Sarah. But you have no idea who I've partnered with over the last five years to keep this empire afloat."

Sarah turned her head slightly, her bruised cheek catching the morning light as she stared at Eleanor with sharp curiosity.

"What are you talking about?" Sarah asked.

Before Eleanor could answer, the private penthouse elevator chimed, and the heavy brass doors slowly slid open to reveal a tall, impeccably dressed man holding a leather briefcase, stepping out into the hallway with a cold, knowing smile.
