Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

The private executive elevator rose rapidly, bypassing the public floors and shooting straight toward the penthouse suite that had remained locked under strict security codes for half a decade. Inside the sleek mahogany car, the silence was suffocating. Sarah stood near the control panel, her bruised knuckles gently pressing against the stainless steel buttons. Eleanor stood rigidly in the opposite corner, clutching her white gown around her as if she were freezing to death. Two bewildered security guards stood rigidly at attention, completely unaware of the political war zone unfolding between the two women.

"You shouldn't have come back here," Eleanor muttered, staring at her own reflection in the polished brass doors. Her voice lacked its previous venom, replaced by the hollow desperation of a cornered predator. "You could have stayed away, taken the stipend we arranged, and lived a quiet life somewhere far from the city."

"A stipend?" Sarah turned her head slowly, her green eyes flashing with intense fury. "You mean hush money paid out of my grandfather’s estate while you locked me in a private psychiatric facility and stole my rightful inheritance? You called that a generous exit package."

"It was an act of mercy," Eleanor shot back, briefly regaining a fraction of her haughty composure. "You were unstable. Grief-stricken. The board agreed that a young woman with your temperament could never manage a multi-billion-dollar hospitality empire. We saved you from yourself."

"You framed me," Sarah corrected, her voice dropping an octave as the elevator dinged softly, announcing their arrival at the top floor. The doors slid open to reveal a dimly lit hallway lined with rare oil paintings and security cameras. "You drugged me on the night of the corporate merger, planted falsified embezzlement documents on my desk, and let your cronies rough me up in the sub-basement just an hour ago to remind me of my place. But times have changed, Eleanor. And so have the locks."

Sarah stepped out of the elevator first, leading the way toward the massive double doors of the penthouse office. Eleanor hurried after her, her high heels clicking sharply against the imported Persian rug.

"You can't just walk in there," Eleanor protested, grabbing Sarah's bare arm. "That office requires biometric clearance. The system recognizes only the primary executive board members, and your access was permanently revoked five years ago."

Sarah didn't even break her stride. She simply shook Eleanor’s hand off her arm with a sharp jerk, walked up to the heavy mahogany doors, and pressed her bleeding, bruised thumb directly onto the optical glass scanner embedded in the wall.

For three agonizing seconds, the scanner glowed a harsh, warning red. The security guards took a half-step forward, ready to intervene at Eleanor’s command. Eleanor let out a breath of nervous relief, thinking the system had successfully rejected the impostor.

Then, the red light flickered, turned a brilliant, welcoming emerald green, and emitted a crisp chime. The heavy deadbolts clicked open one by one, releasing a mechanical hiss as the doors slowly swung inward.

Sarah turned back to look at the stunned, pale face of the woman who had ruled her empire in the shadows.

"The system was coded by my grandfather," Sarah said softly, stepping across the threshold into the dark, panoramic office overlooking the sprawling city skyline. "And he made sure the true bloodline could never be locked out."
