Chapter 10 - The Grand Conference Hall

The grand conference hall of The Grand Sterling Hotel was an architectural masterpiece of vaulted ceilings, dark oak paneling, and floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows that filtered the gray afternoon light into geometric patterns across the Persian carpet. Around the massive oval mahogany table sat forty of the most powerful corporate directors, regional managers, and financial stakeholders in the global hospitality sector. The air was thick with palpable tension and whispered speculation. Tablets rested on the polished wood, glowing with the forensic audit files and federal notifications that had been broadcasted across the network an hour earlier.

When the heavy oak doors at the front of the room slowly swung inward, the frantic murmuring died instantly. Total silence fell over the room.

All forty pairs of eyes turned toward the entrance. Expecting to see Eleanor Vance marching in with her usual haughty authority, the board members instead froze in sheer disbelief as Sarah Vance stepped across the threshold.

She wore her casual white tank top, grey jeans, and worn sneakers. The bruises on her cheek and jawline were stark and undeniable against her pale skin, and her knuckles still bore faint traces of dried blood. Yet she walked with a terrifying, absolute composure, her chin held high and her gold "SV" pendant catching the amber light filtering through the stained glass.

Several senior board members gasped, whispering angrily among themselves. One of the regional directors, a silver-haired man named Richard Sterling—a distant cousin who had allied himself with Eleanor years ago—slammed his hand onto the table and stood up.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "This is an emergency executive session of the board of directors. Trespassers and unauthorized individuals have no right to be in this room, especially someone dressed like she just crawled out of an alleyway!"

Sarah didn't even break her stride. She walked straight down the center aisle toward the head of the oval table where Eleanor’s empty leather chair awaited her. The security guards standing near the doors looked toward Richard for commands, but Sarah raised a single bruised hand, stopping them dead in their tracks.

"Sit down, Richard," Sarah said, her voice cutting through the cavernous room with a chilling, effortless authority.

"How dare you—" Richard started, puffing out his chest as he glared down the table.

"I said, sit down," Sarah repeated, her green eyes locking onto his with such intense, unyielding fury that the older man actually faltered, slowly lowering himself back into his leather chair under the weight of her gaze.

Sarah reached the head of the table. She didn't sit in Eleanor’s chair. Instead, she placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany surface, leaning forward slightly as she surveyed the forty most powerful people in the building.

"You've all had the last hour to read the forensic audit files broadcasted across the corporate network," Sarah said, her voice steady and clear. "You’ve seen the wire transfer ledgers. You’ve seen the offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under Arthur Pendelton's law firm. And as of twelve minutes ago, the FBI has taken both Arthur Pendelton and Eleanor Vance into federal custody for systemic embezzlement and corporate fraud."

An explosion of gasps and chaotic shouting erupted around the table. Directors stood up, papers rustled wildly, and accusations flew back and forth across the room. The entire corporate foundation of The Grand Sterling was shaking violently, threatening to collapse into total ruin.

"Order!" Sarah shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos like a whip. She didn't scream; she didn't lose her temper. She simply projected a raw, undeniable power that commanded absolute obedience.

The room slowly quieted down, every eye fixed on the bruised young woman standing at the head of the table.

"The empire isn't collapsing," Sarah said softly, pulling the parchment document from her inner pocket and laying it flat on the mahogany wood. "It’s being reclaimed. And under the final binding decree of my grandfather, Sterling Vance, the rules of engagement have just changed forever."

She slid the parchment across the table toward Richard Sterling, who reached out with a trembling hand to pick it up. As Richard scanned the legal text, his face turned the color of ash.

"This... this is impossible," Richard whispered, looking up in sheer horror. "You can't do this. Forty percent equity transferred to a worker cooperative? That strips the board of absolute control!"

May you like

"It doesn't strip control," Sarah said, standing tall and touching her gold necklace. "It restores balance. And if any one of you has a problem with that, the federal marshals are still waiting in the lobby to take your statements as well."
