Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Lobby

The heavy silence that followed the young woman's declaration felt heavier than the marble pillars supporting the soaring ceiling of The Grand Sterling. Whispers immediately rippled through the gathered crowd of wealthy patrons and hotel executives. Heads turned, and smartphones subtly angled downward, desperate to capture the unprecedented spectacle of Eleanor Vance—the untouchable queen of hospitality—losing her composure in public. Eleanor’s chest heaved beneath her expensive white gown, her manicured fingers trembling slightly as the full weight of the words settled over her.
The red-haired woman, whose name was Sarah Vance, stood her ground amid the growing commotion. The cuts on her cheek seemed to pulse under the harsh lobby lights, yet her posture remained rigid and unbreakable. She did not blink, nor did she retreat a single inch. She simply watched Eleanor unravel, measuring every micro-expression crossing the older woman’s face.
"Guards," Eleanor finally choked out, her voice losing its previous authoritative edge, replaced by a frantic urgency. "Someone, remove this—this intruder from the premises immediately."
Two burly security guards in dark suits hurried over, stepping between Eleanor and Sarah. They hesitated for a split second, recognizing the terrifying aura of their primary employer, yet sensing the palpable danger radiating from the bleeding girl in front of them. One of the guards reached out a heavy hand toward Sarah’s shoulder, intending to escort her forcibly out through the revolving doors.
"Touch me," Sarah said, her voice low and dangerously steady, "and you won't just be fired by the end of the day. You’ll be facing a civil suit for corporate assault."
The guard paused, his hand hovering mere inches from her white tank top. He looked back at Eleanor for confirmation, but the matriarch was completely frozen. Eleanor’s mind raced backward through decades of carefully buried secrets, corporate acquisitions, and a tragedy she thought she had successfully erased from the public record. The initials on the gold necklace—SV—stood for Sterling Vance, the founder's true lineage, a bloodline that was supposed to have ended in a fiery car crash five years ago.
"Listen to me, Eleanor," Sarah continued, stepping past the paralyzed guard as if he were nothing more than a ghost. She closed the distance between them until she was close enough to smell the expensive jasmine perfume of the woman who had tried to destroy her. "You thought a locked basement and a bribed police report would keep me gone forever. But I survived."
Eleanor swallowed hard, her throat dry as dust. She looked around desperately for her chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, who was supposed to be managing the annual shareholder gala today. Instead, Arthur was nowhere to be found in the crowd, leaving Eleanor entirely alone to face the ghost she had created.
"You are trespassing," Eleanor whispered hoarsely, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning. "You have no proof of anything."
Sarah reached into the pocket of her grey jeans and pulled out a battered, waterproof flash drive, holding it up so Eleanor could see the small blinking light.
May you like
"Proof?" Sarah smiled coldly, her bruised lip splitting slightly to reveal a drop of crimson. "Everything you need is right here. And by midnight, the board of directors will have it too."
