Chapter 7: The Gag Order**

Within forty-eight hours, Victoria Montgomery’s legal team filed an emergency restraining order and a multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Claire. Marcus Vance was served at his desk while Claire was preparing an injunction. The court order forbade Claire from coming within a thousand feet of Leo, his school, or the Montgomery properties, backed by the threat of immediate federal detention.

"They’re trying to bankrupt us with procedural filings," Marcus said, running a hand through his gray hair. "If we go into standard civil court, this will drag on for three years. Leo will be nine before you get a hearing." Claire looked at the television in the corner of the office, which was broadcasting the announcement for the annual Montgomery Foundation Children’s Benefit Gala at the Symphony Center. "Then we don’t wait for their court," Claire decided, her jaw set firm. "We take the evidence to the one place where Victoria Montgomery cannot buy the jury: live television."
