Chapter 1: The Shattered Gala**

The ballroom of the St. Clair Manor had dissolved into a suffocating silence. Silverware hovered inches above porcelain plates, and the soft hum of the string quartet withered into nothingness. Six-year-old Leo remained anchored against Claire’s neck, his small fingers clinging to the cheap cotton fabric of her gray uniform as if letting go meant falling into an abyss. Claire looked over the boy’s head, meeting the furious, diamond-hard eyes of Victoria Montgomery. Beside Victoria stood Julian Montgomery—Leo’s father, the undisputed heir to the Montgomery shipping empire, and the man who had abandoned Claire in an alley clinic seven years prior.

"Security, remove this woman immediately," Victoria commanded, her voice slicing through the gilded hall like broken glass. Julian raised a trembling hand, his throat tight as he stared at the woman he had buried in false police reports and forged NDAs. "Wait," Julian managed, stepping forward, his designer tuxedo looking suddenly ill-fitting against the naked truth standing in the room. Claire didn’t run. She lowered Leo gently to the marble floor, kneeling so she was eye level with the child who bore her exact hazel gaze. She placed a soft palm against his tear-streaked cheek. "I’m here, Leo," she whispered, her voice steady enough to defy the hundred elite onlookers staring down at her. "I never stopped looking."
