Chapter 5: The Stolen Ledger

Clara stared at Julian, the weight of his words hanging heavily in the cold night air of the library. The flickering embers from the fireplace cast long, dancing shadows across their faces. The revelation was staggering, yet it offered a fragile thread of hope where only despair had lived just moments before. If Viktor’s acquisition of her family’s debt was built on forged documents, then his entire legal claim over her was nothing more than an elaborate extortion scheme.
“If you have the original ledgers, why haven’t we gone to the authorities?” Clara asked, her voice urgent as she clutched Julian’s jacket sleeve. “Why wait?”
“Because Viktor has judges and city officials in his pocket,” Julian explained grimly, keeping his voice low as he glanced toward the heavy oak door. “If we walk into a local police precinct tonight, Viktor will know before we reach the front desk. His reach in this city is absolute. We need ironclad, undeniable proof that bypasses local corruption entirely—something we can hand directly to the federal prosecutor’s office downtown.”
“And where is that proof now?” Clara asked, her heart pounding against her ribs.
“It’s inside Viktor’s private safe, located in his downtown penthouse,” Julian replied steadily. “The very penthouse he’s ordering you to move into by dawn.”
Clara stepped back, the full absurdity and danger of the plan washing over her. “You want me to walk straight into his stronghold? Into the lion’s den, Julian? He’ll be watching my every move. I won’t even be able to breathe without him knowing.”
“I won’t let you go in alone,” Julian promised, stepping forward and taking her hands once more. His grip was firm, reassuring, and entirely steady. “I have a contact inside his security detail—a man Viktor crossed months ago. He’s willing to disable the eastern security grid for ten minutes tomorrow afternoon while Viktor is at the corporate board meeting. You’ll have a ten-minute window to open the safe, retrieve the original ledgers and the forged contracts, and hand them to me at the rendezvous point.”

Clara looked deep into Julian’s eyes, searching for any hesitation, any doubt. She found only resolute loyalty and a shared desperation to end Viktor’s reign of terror once and for all. She thought of her mother, of the suffocating debt, and of the way Viktor had degraded her in front of high society. She had spent her entire life trying to be the polite, compliant heiress her parents raised. But compliance had brought her to this dark room, facing a monster in a maroon suit.
“Ten minutes,” Clara whispered, a cold, hard resolve settling over her features. She lifted her chin, the tears completely gone, replaced by a fierce determination. “I’ll get the ledgers.”
